Anyone added a gun rack to their yak? I'm trying to do so without adding anything permanent. Having one that is adapted to fit in scotty mounts would be ideal but I can't find anything out there.

Scotty makes this Rod Balancer but I can't decide if I would be ok with using 2 of them without some sort of way to strap down the gun.

Thoughts?

ETA: Ended up going with the 2 Scotty Rod Balancers. Haven't tried it out for real yet, but took some practive paddling strokes in the driveway and I never clipped the gun. I'll also use a paddle leash during transportation. Should keep it out of the way.

I'll also probably add a scotty base to one of the forward accesory plates to keep the gun handy if I'm paddling somewhere that I might jump ducks.

I saw that one but it utilizes the track system which I don't have on my kayak. I have some scotty bases on their way that I'll be mounting on my kayak so I was hoping for something I could use with them as a gun rack. So far, no luck unless I go with the rod balancer in the OP.

I like the rod balancer. Why don't you just add some straps to that? Bungees or reusable zip ties would probably do it.

Kind of what I'm thinking. I got a bunch of paddle/accessory leashes on clearance a while back, so I could use one of those as a safety measure just in case it did somehow get knocked loose.

Yeah, looks like you habe a lot of surface on those to put an eye bolt or something through there. Those are pretty nice.

My current best plan is to use 2 of these Scotty Round Rail Mount Adapters

with 2 of the Scotty rod balancers

on the stabilizer bar/thwart right behind the seat on my Predator MX that you can see in this pic:

Looks like you might clip the shotgun with your paddle while paddling.

I think I would be trying to find a vertical mount similar to rod holders.

maybe some variety of this UTV gun holder.

Not disagreeing, but what would be your reasoning? For a gun I would want 2 points of contact so as to not put too much torque on your mount. I can't foresee a way to add a higher, secondary point of contact in a kayak. Maybe if there was a mount that, similar to a rod holder, contained a large portion of the butt end of the gun? Then I would feel more secure about it. Just spit-balling really at this point. I haven't seen a lot of options it why I came to the OB.

If you used a crate in the back, you could figure out a way to have a higher point of contact.

Just balance it on your legs. What's the worst that can go wrong?

Or get one of these:

similar to the one pictured. A fitted well for the butt to sit and then a higher point of contact for the fore end/barrel.

you could have it directly behind your back with the top of the seat used as the base for the upper contact. Or you could build a L bracket from aluminum or even steel to provide the upper support.

The reason I would want this is to keep it out of the way of my paddle.

Y'all are getting mighty fancy. If hitting the paddles is a concern, what's the problem with just strapping it down in the back inside of a floating case?

I want a gun-rack on my kayak, dammit! Quit keeping it simple!

But no, seriously, it's to reduce bulk. Duck hunting out of kayaks in the past has taught me that space is at a premium, and those floating gun cases take up some room. And I may be hunting in areas where twisting around and fiddling with a strapped in gun case is not ideal if I can't get to a bank to get out and organize all of my stuff.

Strapping it down to the back is definitely an option, I just wanted to explore what other ideas the OB had to offer.

ETA: I'm not overly concerned about hitting it with my paddle. The gun (26" barrel 870) is total length of 48.5" and my kayak is 34" at it's widest - so maybe 30-32" where the gun would be. That would only leave 8-9" max sticking out the side. With my aggressive paddle strokes, I don't foresee hitting the gun to be an issue, but I may be wrong.
