Have you looked at adding a few pieces of gear track to those black plates? Maybe 4" gear track.
Then you can run some flange bolts through true gun mounts and slip into the gear track.

That's definitely an option. I'm already adding the scotty mounts to the bar so I was looking for options to utilize those. But the tracks are cheap to add so if the scotty thing doesn't pan out, I'll probably go that route.

always kept my gun in a waterproof case when kayaking. salt spray on that gun and it could get nasty

Not much salt water in Oklahoma, but I agree. If I were hunting south LA, definitely would keep it cased up.

just sit on the bank like a normal person

You might already know this, but toilet flange bolts from Lowes are MUCH cheaper than the retail gear track bolts if you end up needing them.

Yessir. Working in industry now. Crazier pace, but always busy. It's been fun. Still doing what I did before, more or less, just now for one company instead of as a consultant.

Right. Good deal man. I need to get on the job hunt I suppose.
You in some decent waterfowling up there?

Supposedly. I went Saturday but didn't see anything though. Less pressure in general, but the good places still get pressure. My next move is knocking on doors. Western OK is pretty sparsely populated and farmers want you pushing birds off their crops so I might be able to work that into some good shoots.

If you find some geese let me know. Have goose spread will travel

I'll definitely do that. Apparently they murder them in peanut fields up here.

Ended up going with the 2 Scotty Rod Balancers. Haven't tried it out for real yet, but took some practive paddling strokes in the driveway and I never clipped the gun. I'll also use a paddle leash during transportation. Should keep it out of the way.
I'll also probably add a scotty base to one of the forward accesory plates to keep the gun handy if I'm paddling somewhere that I might jump ducks.

There's got to be a better way to do that. I think you're going to clip the shotgun when paddling, either with your paddle or something else. I just don't think it's a good idea to have that much of your shotgun hanging over the side of the kayak. You're just asking for something to knock it off.
Crate in the back
Base in the crate for the butt of the shotgun
Vertical rod strapped to the crate
Strap on the vertical rod to secure the barrel of the shotgun
Cheap, easy, secure and out of the way.

Why not just slide the barrel into a rod holder?

I know it looks that way, but I really don't think I will. I did some practice strokes in the driveway and never hit it.
ETA: I may flip the bases to face the other way to give me a little more clearance if hitting it on my strokes becomes a problem.

I just think there are other ways to do it that don't have the risk.
Either way, good luck. I would love to go duck hunting in my kayak. Just not sure where I could go.
ETA: Can you run a rod between those two plates in the back so the shotgun faces backwards?

Part of the goal of this was also to keep the back tankwell open during transport to use as storage for decoys, blind material, and other hunting gear, so while I could do that, I am trying to keep that area as open as possible. I will likely have my dog with me in the front area so I don't want it up there either if I can avoid it.
ETA: With a paddle leash, I'm really not worried about it from a security standpoint. And I can always flip the bases around to give me more clearance on my strokes if that is an issue.
I may add either velcro straps or some zip ties to close the top of the rod balancers.

Good thing you don't hunt roseau. Why not just keep it between your legs on the bottom of the yak?
