A beginner's guide to making a duck call by a beginner
Very Pic heavy

I'll try to walk you through this and show how to make a call. It's surprisingly easy. I'm very much a beginner and I'm practicing using oak that I got at Lowe's. When I get better I'll use better exotic wood.

If you notice anything that I should be doing different, please point it out.

Cut the blank for the barrel:

Drill the 5/8 hole for the barrel:

Mounted on the lathe:

Turning it down:

Getting a rough shape:

Getting the shape right (actually don't like the shape too much but I'm still working on that)> I use the wrench to get the right size for the band that I will put on the end.:

Final shape complete:

Now for a little sanding:

After sanding I burnish the barrel with the wood chips:

Next post is the insert:

Here's the insert:

Get it mounted in the lathe:

Rough Shape:

Change to a chuck and continue the shaping:

Got the shape down:

Install the chuck and drill bit to drill the insert. It's 3.375 inches deep:

Insert drilled:

Finish the shape:

I've already sanded and burnished the insert and here it is installed into the jig:

I use the band saw to cut out a rough shape:

Now to finalize the shape and file it down:

I just use a bastard file:

After that I'll put the reed and cork in and tune it up and put some finish on it.

All in all it takes me about an hour on the lathe and filing.

I glued a copper band on it last night and I'll post a pic of the final product when it's done:

Thats pretty cool man. Very interesting. How much does a lathe that size usually run?

This one is a Jet 1220VS. It's called a midi lathe meaning it isn't full size and it isn't a mini. It also has variable speed. I got it on amazon last year. I'm still learning though.

Here it is on amazonI don't think I paid that much though:

I'd love to get into woodworking, but I have no artistic skill and am not a very finesse worker.

Looks good, looking forward to seeing the final product.
