We picked up a 7 week old French Brittany last week. Lately he has peed in his kennel several times. We let him out every 3 hours at night and when we are at work. He is in a large kennel with a divider so he doesnt have a whole lot of room. The other day after being outside for an hour and using the bathroom twice I fed him in there and he peed while he was eating his food. It's usually just at night and when we are at work when he pees. I have read mixed reviews regarding punishing them when they pee in the kennel. Any tips would be appreciated. This is my first time to crate train a dog.

When you say he doesn't have much room, are talking barely enough to turn around or more than that? If he can get away from the piss, he'll do it. That being said, he's only 8 weeks old, stick with doing what you're doing, and as he grows, he should begin to dislike sitting in his own piss.

This is the issue.
In all seriousness, keep doing what you are doing. He will get the hang of it in a week or two. You really have to praise the shite out of him when he takes a piss outside. Make him realize he really did something good as childish as it may seem.

As for the kennel, he should have barely enough room to turn around. Anything more will not work.

Good Luck

Pretty much what 4WHLN said and make sure to clean the hell out of his kennel after he pees in it so he can't smell any whiff of urine.

Yeah I feel like I am overreacting since he is 8 weeks. I do need to make the kennel a little smaller since he can turn around now.

We have puppy pee parties outside. Our neighbors probably think we are morons

Probably just a puppy thing...

Could also be a Spaniel thing, my 9 y/o cocker will pee in his kennel if I leave him in it long enough.

If your puppy has gone to the bathroom in its kennel, you have been put back a few weeks at least on your training. The olfactory senses in your dog are so tuned he will continue to pee in his crate until you can completely remove any smell or trace of his waste.

You should be putting your dog outside every hour on a leash so he stays close and make sure he uses the bathroom. After he does you have to act like he scored the winning touchdown.

If he pottys in the house you cannot discipline him if you did not catch him in the act. He will only be confused more. I found that after your dog goes outside you reward him with 30-40 minutes of free time of an area in your house. Then kennel him back up for the remaining minutes of that hour so that he learns to hold it.

Three hours is a long time for a puppy to hold it when they don't have the muscle control developed yet. I have trained dozens of different breeds using this method and in my experience is the easiest on the pups as well.

When pups are that young they can pee every 15-30 mins depending how much they drink. it will be hard to get results that young so don't beat yourself up.If u have a secure room with a hard floor try and placing him there when you not home with some paper in one corner and don't be shocked if he chews the paper up he's just a pup lol.

OP, Don't "punish" him for it. He will have no idea what you're punishing him for.

Just reward the good behavior. A dog will almost always do what you want him to do, if you can properly communicate that want.

Eventually housebreaking WILL take. Just be patient. Remember... he's only 8 weeks old!

Don't feed him in his kennel (at least that's what it sounded like in your OP) make sure he doesn't hVe enough room to get away from it - keep doing what your doing he will get it - reward for good behavior

You can't punish him after the fact.

I have always found that catching them in the act, picking them up in the act and taking them outside saying the same word helps. Like "peepee". I have had them pee all over my pants but they soon get the idea the act "peepee" is for outside.

I can take my 8 yr old boykin outside now and tell her to peepee and she does whether she really needs too or not.

I had a springer that was crate trained and it was great. My boykin we spoiled and she never took to a crate. It was nice to tell that springer to "kennel" when folks came over. She would stay in her crate with the door open. As a matter of fact as she got old she became very defensive of that crate.

They do have to get big enough to hold it to go all day without peeing.

This for sure.

My new puppy is about to be 6 months and she's just getting to the point where she can sort of control her happy bladder. She pees a lot...and it smells awful.

She also tears up her pee pad when kenneled every. single. time.

Is the divider solid and not wire? I really hate the wire crates, the plastic ones are much better makes the crate seem smaller to the dog.

Don't feed in the crate, feed next to a door for quick access to the outside.

A good rule of thumb is 1 hour per month, so you're looking at 2 hours between trips.

Don't punish the dog, he will have no idea what you are punishing him for. If you catch him in the act say "no" pick him up and take him outside and say "pee" or something, eventually he will pee on command.

It takes time train one, be patient.

Do not punish!!
'The bond' between you and your dog is made from week 7 to 12.

Build only confidence and ' the will to learn' in your pup.

This will imprint your dog to be a learner it's whole life.

You should express alpha after week 12.

Due to your bond formed, it will be eager to please you vs a newer harsher way of being handled.

Ps- puppy bladders are tiny. You can't win the peepee battle for weeks to come.

Keep up the positive!!

Good luck!!!
