Have they made prior contact with you about this? Maybe you should call and ask the details and possibly the history of these warnings. Something is really fishy about this.

Check with village to see if notice had been provided to the prior owner. If notice had been provided and the seller didn't didn't disclose this information, you may have recourse against the prior owner. It's Illinois, worse yet, Chicago (yea, a suburb)--the rules are different up there.

I know you said the letter has the village seal/letterhead, but this all kind of sounds like a shady tree service's halfassed marketing campaign.

Way too many variables to tell you with any accuracy.

I'd think 5 mature trees in a residential subdivision in a money area like Chicago could easily run 5k. But you need to get on the horn and get some people to come out and give some quotes.

If you do have to drop the trees you may get a discount taking all 5 down at the same time since they only have to bring the equipment out 1 time and you will provide them with a full day or two of work.

Do any of you people know how to use trigonometry? You can easily measure the height using a pencil and paper, protractor and tape measure.

How do you measure a tree? I would rather see the pics of how he is going to measure it. Do you rent a man-lift? Climb the fricker?

This beats all I've seen. Exaggeration of tree size.

FYI a significant portion of tree service cost is removing the tree from your yard once it is felled. Now oaks are a pita to fell, but say a pine you may be able to pay someone $200 to fell while it will be $600-800 total to fell and remove.

Point being, if the cost is an issue you can see if they may just fell the trees and potentially cut them in movable pieces. Then you can remove them yourself. Somewhere like Chicago, once they are felled you can probably post an ad online and people will come take the wood for your for free for firewood or what not.
