I will just state this:
Both rounds are great rounds but there is a reason the .308 is the most widely used round for swat and police snipers...

Thanks. Might try that one out. The Nosler 142gr trophy grade rounds are $50/box

And why is that exactly?

For someone that is such a smart guy when it comes to guns you sure seem to be a huge dumbass.

I mean truly, you have more than once said snide shite that wasn't even remotely accurate.

LRI is blueprinting the action and time the bolt. I do not have the tools nor the know how to do this.

When I get the action back, I will be adding a new trigger, installing the barrel and putting on a stock.

To me that is building a rifle.

maybe not to you but you also don't know when a 2011 had a sight installed and whether it is backwards.

Couple of years from now when we get a Ruger/Marlin 16" side loading 30-30 lever action with side eject we can comfortably mount a scope rail with a Leupold FX-II Ultralight 2.5x28 scope that will be my answer for a sub 200 yard deer shot.

Until then either of these is more than sufficient for the job. Honestly I'd just start window shopping and see if a deal falls across your lap. No need to lock yourself into a caliber before you start shopping. Sooner or later you will run across something you love or find a great deal you can't pass up. Just be prepared to jump on the deal when you find it.

I've only hunted with .270 and 30-06.

However, I am looking to get a rifle for my 14 y/o. He is above avg. size/strength for his age but new to shooting.

These are the two I am between for him. I realize both will do what he will use it for(deer/pigs inside of 200 yards).

How much more is the recoil of a .308 vs. the 6.5 CM?

No, get a 375HH and load it down to the 35 "wheelin" for your deer.

Then when you take on that big buff in Africa, you can load your 375 back up.

You got to think ahead, man.

Understand that a lot more goes into felt recoil than just the caliber. A study/heavy .308 will have damn near the same felt recoil as a light 6.5. Obviously if you are toting the gun through the mountains on a elk hunt you don't want a 9lb rifle, but shooting from a box stand, a heavier gun would likely do well for him.

I made the mistake of getting a 7mm08 Vanguard Compact model for an 11 year old thinking that the recoil would be more manageable than my full sized Vanguard in .308. That wasn't the case. So now I'm looking at putting a Bell and Carlson stock on the compact model to try to take out some of the recoil.

I've actually never shot a .308, but my 6.5CM shoots like a .22lr with the 143 eldx. It impresses me every time I shoot it with how little recoil it has.

Depends on the ammo, all other things equal. A 150gr .308 load will be about the same as a 140gr 6.5 load. Compare 180gr .308 to 125gr 6.5 and the .308 will be noticeably more stout if the rifles are light enough. Either should be easily manageable for a 14 year old, especially a big kid.

Years ago itd be a non-issue. Reduced recoil .308 loads were readily available but I'm sure that shite is impossible to find now. That combined with 6.5 creedmoor ammo seeming to be easy to find, the 6.5 is probably the better beginner choice. Shoot 140gr soft points for excellent deer smacking.

If you actuay want to find ammo to hunt with, don't buy anything other than a 308.

Might be the most consistently available ammo out there right now.

These days, look for ammo first, then buy the rifle.

6.5 is hands down a better choice over the .308 except for ammunition availability. I love the .308 but it wouldn’t even be a thing if neither existed and someone designed both and were comparing which one to release. The only thing the .308 wins on is energy at 400 yards and in. It’s a wash though because both have more than enough energy at those ranges for it not to matter. 6.5 has been used in Europe for hunting for a long time. It’s just getting popular here because long range shooters realized it’s benefits.

Recoil is a major factor most seem to ignore. Less recoil along with proper shooting form makes it far easier to spot your own shot through the scope. I’ve shot thousands of rounds through both and the 6.5 wins easily here.

Cost is about a wash. When I shot long range competition I mostly reloaded but if I didn’t have time I could get hornady match ammo cheaper than .308 match ammo. Sure you can get cheap surplus .308 but you only use that for plinking.

Wind drift the 6.5 wins. Energy retention at long range the 6.5 wins. The only reason the .308 still exists is because of it’s use by the military.

All other things equal like rifle weight there is about a 25% recoil reduction with the 6.5. It’s definitely a better choice for a kid. Especially when you consider most hunting rifles are on the lighter weight side. It will help him develop better as a shooter.

The 308 shoots like a rainbow and is only good for squirrels and maybe rabbits of smaller size, the 6.5 only drops 2” at 950 yards and can take down Cape buffalo with ease.

Cape Buffalo please. I took my last bull elephant at 2 miles with it last year.
