Wanting a new gun for the season. Can’t decide on the caliber.
Farthest shoots I have is at 150 yards.

For what purpose?

Deer hunting at less than 150 yds? Either is fine, but I'd pick the .308 or even better 7mm-08

Either one.

I like the 6.5 but it doesnt really need to be a creedmoor. Just pick a 6.5.

You’d be fine with either. Just flip a coin

At 150 yards you could pick damn near any caliber/cartridge ever brought up in any deer rifle discussion and be perfectly fine assuming you know how to shoot.

.308 will have a little more energy at 150 yards but will come with a little more recoil.

If you ever plan on shooting 3-400 yards + then the CM will outshine the .308 as an overall caliber IMO.

Both will be point and shoot trajectories at 150 yards.

.308 is my easy choice. Itll give you more horsepower for a very moderate increase in recoil. Shooting deer at basicslly any distance it wont matter either way, get whichever one tickles your fancy. If bigger game are ever a potential, the .308 stands out.

I would choose 308 b/c ammo is much more common/available.

I just had to make this call for an AR10 build and went with a 6.5 CM. I went with it because it still has great killing power at short ranges, kicks significantly less, and has the potential to reach out to 400+yds for fun distance shooting. If I didn't care about my kids shooting the rifle or about reaching out for other distances, the .308 is probably the better pure deer rifle inside 150 yards.

308 10000000%

Both will do the job. But as someone who has used both exclusively over the past 3 years. Unless its 250+ yds.. i wont take the 6.5 anymore. Way too many expansion issues, tried several different rounds, and closer range the 6.5 is just too hot. Too many hard trails, or lack of blood. I am not shitting on the 6.5, as i still use mine. But only for longer range. Cant go wrong with the 308. Plus ammo much more easy to find

Inside 300 yds.

After that the CM produces more energy.

Just FYI

For a little more data (.308 using 165 hornady with a muzzle velocity of 2700fps and the 6.5 cm using 143gr ELD-x also traveling at 2700 muzzle velocity)

But, for the OP, either are great cartridges.

I have 3 .308s and 2 6.5cm.
Building my son a 6.5m as soon as the action gets back from the shop.

buddy of mine swears by his CZ in 308. He topped it with a Zeiss and uses the ballistics app for the scope.

says it may be the best and only rifle he'll ever need again. not buying anything else after that. we'll see.

I am not very familiar with 6.5. I shoot a .270, but my cousin shoots a .308. I will say if we ever have to track one of his deer they did not go far at all.

Unless you have a man bun, then go for the 6.5

You can cherry pick your loads to manipulate this. The 6.5 doesn't really start to step away across the board till 500 or so. None of that matters for hunting deer. The 6.5 is the better long range paper puncher, but then you have to live with toting around a creedmoor. Who the hell wants to do that? Elmer Keith will be looking down from the sky laughing his arse off.
