.30-378 is an insane caliber.

7mm STW is another very good long range caliber. I'm pretty sure I would stick to .30-06 for 500 yards and less and .300 win mag for past that on deer.

.30-06 always gets overlooked as a long range caliber, but it's a very very good performer that's cheap to shoot and usually likes 180+gr bullets.

Fast is fun buts it really all about what your rifle likes. We had loaded up some hotter loads but they didnt shoot as well. My 270 on the other hand loves the hottest load we made for it. The biggest problem with my 25-06 is the lack of bullets available. I really didnt want to go much lighter that 117-120, very few options at those grains in 25 caliber. The guys that loads for my has a 25-06AI Sako and his is a tack driver with a load right over 3600fps.

And for you guys talking about the 7 STW take a look at the RUMs, some of the best ballistics you can find. Not sure how they compare to the 30-378 but I wold guess close.

What kind of scope and mounts do you have? If it's a cheap scope on cheap mounts atop a kicking rifle then there is no way it's gonna stay zeroed. I learned a long time ago when it comes to optics you need to bite the bullet and go the exspensive route. I know it hurts to shell out $500-$700 on a scope but once you own one of them you will never go back to cheap optics. I'm not saying you have cheap optics but 99% of the time when a gun won't stay zeroed it's because of cheap optics/mounts&bases.

Cheap- On sale- Nikon I paid $350 for.

If/when I do make the jump up from a standard round it will be to an ultra mag or equivalent. 7 or 300 RUM most likely.

Remington quit making the 7mm RUM and ammo for it. My brother has that gun. Get a 300 Win mag or 7mm Rem Mag. You cant go wrong with those ballistics and those 2 calibers arent going anywhere.
