Ackley that bad boy and you have my favorite deer round. Very versatile and good out to a long ways.

That would be a .257wby

I had a 25-06 and I'm not a fan. It doesn't do anything that you can't do with a 7mm-08. Loosing a deer that I shot perfectly at 80 yards didn't help.

It might be a count hair flatter shooting, but it isn't enough to matter unless you're launching light bullets at coyotes or something. Recoil is about the same IMO.

I did kill everything I shot with it along with a 300 pound sow hog, but only one of the 8 bullets I put in a living thing exited. It was a 50 yard neck shot.

I don't think it's a bad caliber, but it's the bare minimum for shooting deer IMNHO.

I've had a browning for 18 years and never wanted/needed another deer round. It is picky on ammo but I shoot core loc 120gr. Love the round, never failed me.

I believe the 100 gr are too fast for deer, but the 120 is where it is at.

Not much if a deer hunter and don't know inch more about the .25-06 other than always hearing its a great deer round. I do have a .257 weatherby and that thing is mean when it comes to deer. It will reach out and touch them. I image the .25-06 isn't much different in that regard.

It's also a great round for groundhogs. I hate those things.

5.56 is great for groundhogs and armadillos.

Use the .55 grain round and watch them explode.

They're a little better than 243, unless they're in the right hands; then they're deadly as 270 without the recoil. Good round.

Should have tried Nosler Partitians in that rifle.

I should have tried something else.

Oh well. I don't ever wish I had it back.

My take, it's a good round if you are hand load. BUT, if not hand loading, it is not a easy round to just find anywhere.

I had a weatherby 257 mag. Sold it for the cost of ammo, way to loud and it messed up every deer I shot with it, (3). Was going to get. 25/06 but got a deal on a 700 mt rifle in 7mm/08. I've heard folks swear by 25/06 and is really fun and cheap to shoot. Get good ammo and ask around as it is important to get the right grain bullet for deer not the same as varmint ammo which is why folks lose deer. The varmint stuff blows up and doesn't exit.

Sounds like bullet was too fragile. A 25-06 shooting a 120 gr bullet at about 3000 fps should quickly dispatch any typical sized whitetail deer. The challenge is to be sure the bullet is up to the task. When I got ready to buy my first deer hunting rifle, I was torn between the 25-06 and the 270. At the time, I was living in OR so a future elk hunt was a possiblity. I bought the 270 and have never had a 25-06. If I had a 25-06, I'd certainly not feel undergunned using it to deer hunt. I'd have the same qualifications w/ it that I do all my deer guns: a bullet that I can have a reasonable expectation to enter and exit at whatever range I shoot. I'd prob first try a controlled expansion bullet like the 120 gr Nosler Partition or Accubond, but I'd still do a lot of research.

120gr partitions was going to be my next try, but I just sold it and went back to the 6.5x55

Guy got a hell of a deal. It was a tikka T3 with about 50 rounds down the pipe. Sold it with Leupold rings and base for $300

I would definitely recommend a 120gr not made By Hornady. I haven't found a Hornady load yet that impressed me.
