So is an AR actually good for low penetration and home defense? I’ve checked some studies but want to ask the people here as well. Which round is better to have loaded in case of an in home emergency?

My general understanding is a 223 round start to tumble after contact and then doesn’t penetrate like buck shot or a 9/45 round would. Some people tell me bird shot is great. Others say it won’t do shite if the person is high or has any kind of protection.

Basically I’m ignorant so whatever y’all can teach me I’ll hang up and listen.

Well 556 is 333 more than 223, should be an easy choice.

Not really low penetration but for defense absolutely. Anything adequate for self defense is going to penetrate walls and bad guys.

Its a rifle caliber. Its a whole different category of power compared to any handgun. Any soft point or hollow point round will be a potent fight stopper, and even FMJ will work.

Go check out theboxotruth.com. But the short answer is that penetration is penetration, and the bullet doesn’t know if it’s going through drywall or a sternum. Shooting when other people might be on the other side of your target always carries risk. Your job is to minimize that risk.

Every round tumbles after contact.

Look up Paul Harrell on YouTube and you should be able to get straight answers.

My AR is the first thing I’d grab for home invasion, wild dogs attacking kids/animals, or someone coming on the property at night.

You’re gonna hear arguments for or against anything that is recommended.

Anyone who would argue that birdshot won’t end a confrontation quickly has never shot anything with birdshot up close. Birdshot wouldn’t be my first choice as my shotgun self defense load, but I do have one loaded with a turkey load (and another with buckshot).

If you have nothing right now, you will probably be better off going to a local gun store and getting whatever caliber they have that they also have ammunition for.

It’s slim pickings right now if you are looking to stock up.

Just shoot varmint loads.

They destroy deer.

I imagine they work on meth heads.

12 gauge (28, 20, or 16) pump with no plug is probably more practical for actual home defense. AR's will def do the job but personally I would be concerned with rifles rounds going through walls to God knows where. Especially with AR's.

Photo of birdshot at 10 feet

However, you're SOL at more than 20 feet.

You think a .223/5.56 will penetrate more walls than shotgun with buckshot?

You really should do more research rather than make assumptions.

75gr Gold Dots are fantastic for home defense, and so is the AR-15.

I grab my Judge before I grab my AR, but both will do.

Seriously though, AR's have been proven to be very effective for home defense. I would go for as short of a barrel as possible, as accuracy and ballistics aren't going to matter at those ranges but maneuverability does.
