I got motivated and did some planting recently. I filled in the youngest field in the background with Sawtooth Acorn and Native Pecan trees. I plugged the Cypress up and down the creek banks that bisect the property anywhere I found a decent hole.

Those are the cypress and pecan in the bucket.

Here is the Sawtooth saplings that came in the big bag.

I've been wanting to do this for a while, I'm glad it all came together and finally got done. My son turns 1 year old this week. He should reap the hunting benefits of this place as a young man.

Could park a truck under a tree and it would fill the bed they make so many acorns

Yeah, this was cow pasture until recently. The backside, you can see 3 ages of timber in the pic, Grew up about 15 years ago when it went a couple years without getting a tractor across the creek and bush hogging. It's a pine thicket that needs thinning. The front side I planted in pine about 4 years ago. It didn't come up great, but it was almost a blessing in disguise as it left great areas to fill in with other trees and layout stand locations. It's becoming a nice recreational property.

I feel we will get way more use and enjoyment out of it this way, as opposed to leasing the rights to someone else to run a few cows.

I just stuck them in where I could. If I have to cut pines off of them in the future then so be it.

I think the pic gives bad depth perception. Most ended up being 15 yards or so from the next closest tree.

That's awesome that you are planting those oaks.
Once spring rolls around, I would suggest you put something around them to keep animals from nipping the fresh buds.

Is there a benefit to the cypress? I know fox squirrels love them but anything else?

Nah, I just hit a government sponsored tree sale and they had everything you could imagine, so I got a handful.

I really just went for the oaks. I got the cypress because they look cool and the pecan just to plant something different that deer also like to eat.

as well as the best bbq wood IMO. just wait for the limbs to fall. I like to smoke my feral hogs with the tree that fed them. Circle of life.

good job

those sawtooth oaks are a great tree.
i planted six in my yard 2 years ago from acorns from my neighbors tree and they are already 10- 12'

keep an eye on them sometimes they want to grow bushy with multiple trunks, if you catch them early you can keep them pruned from the ground up and they'll take off once you do that

I actually did, but it went to voicemail real fast like you didn't have good service or declined me.

I meant to try again later but I forgot once I got side tracked.

one more thing in case you didnt know
nothing will eat the acorns unless there is nothing else there to eat...they are super bitter

its a shame because the trees produce so heavily, but even the squirrels at my place wont eat them
