Clyde glad to know I'm not the only one who takes advantage of the Gulf coast soil and water conservation sale. Grabbed a hand full of nice ones yesterday.....I'll go tmrw after everything has been picked over and take whats left for a lump sum. Usually get a helluva deal since they do not wanna haul them all back to Baton Rouge Nursery from over here

i had a landscape architect tell me that when planting cypress along a river, to try to put some sort of protection so it doesnt get eaten or something.

f-ing beavers and nutricats will snack down cypress seedlings like candy. I planted 100 around a pond at my MiL's, came back two weeks later and they were gone.

I heard some lawyer in S La hired a team of messicans to plant 20K cypress seedlings in some swamp he owned. All eaten.

they are super bitter

I haven't heard that, I've actually heard that dear love them. I just heard they drop acorns early, like September some years.

they do drop early but they are bitter
I've heard that deer will eat them but there is a bunch of research out there that says they are not the best for mast

they will grow fast though and it's a good looking tree. Just pull up all the saplings you find or they will take over

Sawtooth drop early over here in swla (early september) but nothing gets them until they sour or get a little rot on them. Yes extremely bitter.

Fancy seeing you here cgrand. I've got some Shumard & Scarlet oaks by my office and those damned things have been dropping huge acorns steady since September. I planted about 50 up at the deer camp. We'll see if they sprout. If they do... in 10-15 years.

My son planting at the camp back in November. When he's 20 or so he will be able to shoot deer from the camp house.
