Spill clean up and Benzene

To the oil field gurus:
Would the spill clean jobs be very hazardous because of the presence of the Benzene? It is my understanding this is a compound found within oil and is extremely dangerous to ones health.
Anyone got any info out there on this?

It depends on the concentrations of Benzene, as with anything else.
During cleanup, monitors are set at locations that take readings. They alarm when the levels get too high.

I believe Benzene breaks down pretty fast in the atmosphere. I am pretty sure they are monitoring this tightly.

Benzene is in many products, even in Asphalt. Its a large list.

I just remeber the big class action lawsuit many year back here in Baton Rouge over a barge leaking benzene vapors.

Benzene is a deadly gas when it accumulates in closed environments
in this case it is flashing off into the atmosphere
we used to be very cognizant of benzene when we had to open the hatches on overboard water handling equipment offshore

Leukemia is an endpoint.
Some of the workers are probably wearing air sampling pumps to get a representative exposure level for similarly exposed workers. Benzene has a fairly low threshold (aka PEL and STEL) for occupational exposure and is one of the chems closely regulated by OSHA.

Walter Dumas made serious $$$$ from that one. Paid for at least one of his Rolls Royce's. They were lined up outside his Government St. Office for days after that one.

You have to remember, lead was added to mogas, everyone knows the dangers of lead (Then we got unleaded gas). TEL is still used in making Aviation fuel. Then you had MTBE. MTBE gets phased out and now we get ethanol. Another Benzene derivative is Toluene (TNT), it too can be used in Mogas, etc. Your right, just about everything is bad for you.....

Toluene is not TNT. TNT is an acronym for Trinitrotoluene, you get it from feed stocks of nitric acid and toluene in a reaction process.
