This whole charade looks like too much sugar for a dime. My kid is dumb, but I want them to go to Yale. Here is $50,000 extra dollars to repave the parking lot. Why all this nonsense about lying about sports and having people take ACTs for you.

Because it's not that simple. As a nonprofit you have to follow certain accounting rules. Under the table is way easier.

Because the admissions need some sort of plausible deniability.

I don’t understand why you would bribe your way in at USC? I know for a fact there is a international university in Switzerland you can go to for a year and the automatically transfer to USC. I’m sure programs exist for other elite schools around the country.

The endowments of Ivies are so large that it takes a massive donation to buy your way in, and everything still has to be above board, your kid can’t be some average goofball

Because for a lot of the wealthy, where your kid goes to school is just as much a status symbol as where you live, where your summer home is, where your winter home is, where you vacation, etc. And attending that school keeps your shitbag offspring within the privileged class, and hides your failings as a parent.

I’m not sure why this is really a story. I don’t think anyone is shocked rich people use their riches to influence college admissions.
I think the main deal was it was all funneled through a ‘charity’ setup and the government wants their piece of the pie.

Because idiots that come out of Yale or Harvard will have a better plight in life than a genius that comes out of Alabama or LSU.
