An Open Letter To My CEO
Dear Jeremy,
When I was a kid, back in the 90s when Spice Girls and owning a pager were #goals, I dreamed of having a car and a credit card and my own apartment. I told my 8-year old self, This is what it means to be an adult.
Now, seventeen years later, I have those things. But boy did I not anticipate a decade and a half ago that a car and a credit card and an apartment would all be symbols of stress, not success.
I left college, having majored in English literature, with a dream to work in media. It was either that or go to law school. Or become a teacher. But I didn’t want to become a cliche or drown in student loans, see. I also desperately needed to leave where I was living?—?I could get into the details of why, but to sum up: I wanted to die every single day of my life and it took me several years to realize it was because of the environment I was in. So, I picked the next best place: somewhere close to my dad, since we’ve never gotten to have much of a relationship and I like the weather up here. I found a job (I was hired the same day as my interview, in fact) and I put a bunch of debt on a shiny new credit card to afford the move.

Wow.
I'm not reading all that. No wonder he got fired.

Probably not a good idea to publicly slam the company that pays your bills and the CEO that signs the checks, as proven by your update. If you wonder why 18 year olds that live with their parents are doing the same job as you, it is because it is an entry level position with minimum wage pay that does not require a college degree.

I'm 99% certain Yelp isn't supposed to be a career, just side money... Why do so many people view apps like this and uber as careers?

Meh, employment at will state. Goodbye and on to the next one. She majored in English Lit? The chick can't even write a sentence using correct structure.

UPDATE: As of 5:43pm PST, I have been officially let go from the company. This was entirely unplanned (but I guess not completely unexpected?) but any help until I find new employment would be extremely appreciated. My PayPal is paypal.me/taliajane, my Venmo is @taliajane Square Cash is cash.me/$TaliaJane. Thank you so much for helping my story be heard.
Since she was kind enough to put links to her PayPal, etc. in her update, is anyone here going to donate to this poor girl?
shite like this is nuts. Keep spreading the article around, get it to go viral, and boom--thousands of dollars in donations for a moron.

This seems almost typical today. These fricking kids want the corner office right away, and if they get down on their luck they beg for money from strangers. I am so tired of these internet panhandlers.

Let's see if I got this right.
Someone gets a college degree in English Lit. Try using that knowledge to fix your car.
Then she gets an entry level job.
Then she demands that the pay scale be raised to a level to pay for her phone and internet access as well as the rent (to live alone) and utilities.
During her time in college, did she not have friends who went into the real world and had bills to pay. Did she not have any idea of how much she needed to earn to have all the things she wanted?
Now she says Yelp is the problem.
She accepts no responsibility for not preparing herself to live in today's society and for not having any idea how much things cost.
She has a college degree and takes a job designed for high school dropouts to handle with commensurate pay.
Duh!
No wonder she no longer works at Yelp!
P.S. I bet she got soccer participation trophies throughout her childhood....

She'll be the first one to vote for Bernie tho.

I think the CEO fired her because he realized he was employing a crazy person named Talia.

She can always go wait tables.

He should also fire the person that hired that petulant child.

Y'all could give her a job running for coffee, reverse sear steaks, sous vide cod, or light dusting.

I guess you didn't read her letter.
She got her English Lit degree so that she could work in media, not wait tables.
Yelp was going to make her work at least one whole year (that's, like, 11 months too long!) in customer service (I don't know; learning the business or something?! LAME!) before she would even be qualified to transfer over to media.
Yelp just doesn't get it!

So she took an $8/hr job and thinks she can afford to live alone in the bay area, with a car? Makes sense.
She could sell the car, move into a spot closer to work with roommates, and save on the internet, utlities and commute. Of course its much easier to write a sad letter begging for money instead of taking the blame for her own stupid mistakes.
My generation is the worst, I don't want to live on this planet anymore.
ETA: Looking at her instagram, I don't think she's going hungry.
