Tough to prove it was one of their rocks I'm guessing.

OP should just get it fixed. It's not a big deal.

Did you see the truck drop or kick the rock?

Because it sounds like you assume it came from the truck without actually knowing? And if it happened to be a Jetta, would you flag that person down and try to get their insurance info? It's a rock chip, Jesus Christ.

ETA to answe the question, I'd go on living my life because it's a fricking rock chip.

So if an unsecured rocking chair falls off a truck, hits the ground and then smashes into my car, it's just a road hazard?

They pulled him over and we followed. Had to make a claim on the companies insurance that they were negligible.
TL;dr - unless they were negligible, you are SOL.
This advice has been of negligible help to us all.

You are SOL. Those dump truck companies must buy lots of tickets to the police ball.

The police don't have balls

Your comprehensive coverage on your insurance should cover it. File a claim.

Were you back 200 feet like the sign on the back of the truck said, if not oh well.

Call your insurance to cover it. Trucks are not responsible for road hazards unless you have picture of missing mud flaps.

Be cautious when it comes to your comprehensive deductible. Look for a glass policy if you keep a $500 or so amount. In many cases it is cheaper to lower the comp deductible to a point which supercedes a glass replacement policy as well plus you cover yourself for other perils too.

Your insurance should cover the cost of the chip repair, may cost you $25. You don't need a new windshield for a chip.

I did. I got a chip late one afternoon last summer (too late to call insurance company) and by morning it had spread across the window. After that happened, I didn't file a claim for 6 months (waiting for brake tag to expire.)

damage. They'll just argue that you were closer than 200 feet. Your fault.

This argument is bull shite: let's say a rock falls from a truck and doesn't bounce, just slides (highly unlikely). Let's say the sliding rock has a coefficient of friction factor of 0.1, and we wanted to see how fast the truck was traveling for the rock to slide exactly 200' once it falls off the truck, here's the equation and result:

16 [square root] (0.1) friction • (60.6 meters) 200' = 39.38km/hr or 63.4mph

The reality is that 0.1 coefficient of friction is nearly impossible because the rock would be bouncing, and, more than likely, have a coefficient of friction of 0.005 - which, would mean the truck would have to travel at 14mph or less for the rock to go 200' or less..

My zero deductible comprehensive costs me $68 per 6 month term of insurance.

Worth it to not have to worry that my windshield may pick up a rock and get damaged.

I've had 3 in the first 6 months of my new vehicle and all have spread even after getting them fixed. Chalk it up as bad luck and buy a new windshield right before next inspection sticker.

Damn it must suck to be poor and have to worry about these little things in life.

It's 100% on you. There is 0.000000 chance you can prove that it was the truck.

Be a grown up and just replace your own windshield
