I've built models since I was a kid and I've taught my son to do it now. He is currently working on a B-17 and recently finished a Huey "Hog" gunship. One thing I use to do when he was little was I'd go to the hobby shop and find a cheap kit and build it to let him have as a toy. He's 12 now and actually still have a few of them on a shelf in his room. But I'm also like you in that I have little time now to sit and work on a model. I've got a TBF Avenger on my model desk that's been there for close to a year. I need to go by the hobby shop and get some paints and get back to working on it.

You have a hobby shop nearby? There isn't even remotely close. The best hobby shop I have ever seen was down in Pensacola. I have an Accurate Miniatures Avenger in the stack, but that will be a bit. Once I finish the F-16, I will go back to building the ship my Dad served on while in the Navy.

Yeah they could take a hellvalot more damage than the Zero but the Zero was vastly more maneuverable than the Hallcat. In the opening weeks of the war they'd try to dogfight the Zero's and would just hammered. Then they figured out the best move was to attack them head on. They'd take damage but being that their Hellcat could absorb more damage they at least had a chance of shooting down the Zero, which did improve the situation. But once they started using the Thatch Weave, it was a game changer.

Hellcat or Wildcat? From what I have read, the F6F Hellcat was as manueverable as the Zero and had better vertical performance along with armor/armament...

I use to have a Model shop not far from me but they closed down. Now the closest to me is a Hobby Lobby which really just has one model isle, but it is well stocked and usually has most supplies I need.

Really? Does the look like this?

If so you've got the exact same model as me.

Uggg. My bad, I was thinking Wildcat but typed Hellcat (or "Hallcat").

I believe the Zero could still out-turn the Hellcat but in virtually every other area, the Hellcat was as good or better.

Anybody a member of the commemorative air force? I've thought of joining in the past.

Probably at slow speeds, but high-speed turns are another story. I think a lot of it was due to things such as aileron-flutter issues of the Zero.

Japs attacked and killed Americans on American soil. My grandpa was there and thankfully survived. He was an airplane mechanic at Hickam Field.

Without a doubt, I would go and kill as many Japs as I could back then.

Is that formerly known as the Confederate Air Force?

The one I have is 1/48th scale and has marking for the USS Intrepid. I'd have to go back and look at my instructions sheet to see if it has markings to build Bush's Avenger. I don't believe he served aboard the Intrepid.

I think he was on one of the smaller carriers, wasn't he?

I think you may be correct about he slow speed turn. I remember seeing a show where they compared the two against each other a few years ago.

One thing I've always found interesting is how the Japs went all out on offensive power on the Zero and totally disregarded anything that would slow it down, things like armor protection for the pilot or even self sealing fuel tanks. You'd think that they would have realized that seeing how it took so long to get a pilot fully trained and proficient they should at least give some effort to giving some modicum of protection.

The Japs liked dying in battle. Probably would have been disgraceful to show up with bullet holes in you plane.

He was, I could not think of it so I had to go look it up. He served with Torpedo Squadron 51 (VT-51) aboard the Independence Class escort carrier USS San Jacinto.

No doubt. I think the late-war Zeros got self-sealing tanks and at a little more protection, no? I know some of the late war birds did.

Looks like our resident down-vote stalker is back...

I believe they did start giving them seal sealing tanks after they realized they had a bad habit of blowing up after being hit a time or two.

I live with them daily. I look at them sort of like Gollum hanging back and following me around sulking in the shadows.
