Just bump that thread. It will help our case for the Military/History board.

Yeah.

On another note, here is a different topic: What's your take on why the Germans lost the BoB? I think it was because they shifted from hitting airfields/radar installations and moved to cities. I read that the RAF was on its last legs...

Europe. The Germans were much more civil towards POWs plus there were lots of opportunities to "liberate" hot French, Dutch, Italian, and Belgium chicks.

The Pacific was a meat-grinder against dug in opposition that would rather commit suicide (while taking as many Americans with them as possible) than surrender.

Everything I've read or seen agrees with your assessment. The RAF was on the brink of collapse and by that I mean they were probably no more than week at most from totally exhaustion and being rendered combat ineffective. Had the Germans not switched from hitting the airfields and even more importantly the radar stations they would have achieved total air supremacy over Britain.

But that brings up another question, would Hitler have actually gone and invaded England? I'm not so sure he would. I know they had laid out plans ( Operation Sea Lion) but I've always suspected Hitler was still too afraid of the Royal Navy to have actually pulled the trigger. Remember that he viewed the world through strictly racial eyes. This meant that while he viewed people like Russians & Poles as little better than dogs, he also viewed the English as very capable people worthy of respect and fear.

Me also. But at least the Germans actually took and treated prisoners.

Waffen SS

The Waffen did not. They were probably more brutal than the Japanese Imperial Soldiers. To me, the SS were the most scary soldiers because how well trained they were. I think the common Japanese soldier was more fierce than the common German soldier, but the SS were top of the list in regards to brutal and effective opposition. I still would take the European front after reading about Okinawa. There was a reason we had to bomb Japan into submission.

The Germans needed to go after the radar installations and airfields from the get-go and keep hammering those until there are none left. Then, hit the manufacturing, and then, hit naval targets. By doing this, Hitler could wear down Britain's will to fight without losing too many soldiers and sue for a peace. Hitler never wanted to take on England, he wanted England and America as allies.

Totally agree. I don't think the invasion would have happened. Had they knocked the RAF out, they could have strangled Britain into submission by cutting off supply. The wolfpacks would have seen to that. It would have been very difficult to achieve the same outcome (VE day) had this happened.

How do 76,000 WW2 soldiers surrender at the same time? I mean think about that #, that is just cowardly!

MacArthur was a pussy.

My great aunts father was a POW in the Bataan Death March. He credited his survival to growing up working the rice fields of South Louisiana and enduring brutal summers throughout his life. He despised MacArthur and cursed that man until the day he died. I never had the privledge of meeting him, but I hear he was an awesome guy.

My grandfather served in the Pacific and he never went into much detail about the things he saw but some of the stories he did tell me were horrifying. I'd say Europe because from what I know, the Germans treated American, British and French POW's with some kind of humanity.

The Germans and Hitler had a certain amount of respect for the Brits, Americans and French but those bastards really hated the Polish, Russians and of course the Jews. The treatment of western enemies was night and day compared to their treatment of eastern enemies.

I think at the most the Germans only hope was to make the Brits accept a settled peace on terms favorable to Germany.

^This. My wife's Grandfather spent three years as a POW courtesy of the Germans. There were both kinds of guards - some humane and some not so much. From what I gather, it was a whole different world for Japanese held POWs.

My Grandfather had an identical twin, they were both marines

His brother died, and I was told at the service or funeral that a lot of his brothers friends he served with didn't know he had a twin or weren't prepared and they were visibly shaken at the sight of him.

Of all the family heirlooms I've been cut out of, it was all worth it to have the samurai sword he pulled off a dead japanese nco (not traded or bought)I keep it in my office. Motherfricker is still sharp.
