There is a guy rebuilding one of these that he found in someones overgrown back yard. Website he tracks his progress on. Crazy how much work goes into one of these things.

That made think of the British torpedo plane Fairey Swordfish, which deserves some props for disabling Bismarck so the Royal Navy could blow the hell out of it.

This is also the aircraft the Brits used to inflict a pretty serious blow against the Italian fleet in November 1940 at Taranto. What they accomplished there played a big role in the Japanese planning their attack against Pearl Harbor just over a year later.

The "Black Cats" mission in CoD World at War is one of my favorite video game missions of all time. If you haven't played it, you get to go after the Japanese Navy in a PBY Gunship.

Paul Fournet used to have a P-38 at Lafayette in the late 60s and 70s until it crashed in 74.

I built this kit years ago....

... It shared the same fate as my P-61 when my son was little though.

Always looked rather bland to me. Then there's that massive air intake that looks a bit absurd.

the prop marks where it cut into the asphalt on the road were there at least until the early 80's, probably long since resurfaced

My dad worked for Grumman so we were 100% fanboys of Grumman aircraft such as the Wildcat and Hellcat (pictured below)

What's up, Darth? I like the P-39, P-61 Black Widow, F4F Wildcat, JU-87 Stuka, De Haviland Defiant, and a host of others...

ISWYDT.

Besides, that was just before navies started to realize surface ships needed real AA cover. After the Repulse and Prince of Wales were lost they finally got serious about giving battleships and cruisers more anti-air capability.

technically, but it was developed and first flew during the war. It can be considered a WW2 plane as it was obsolete by the Korean war.

I just wanted to include it because it's a favorite of mine.

I think you're right.

A long time ago I had the good fortune to see a P-40 close-up. One of my cousins in Monroe had a friend who worked for some big shot who owned "Hold'n My Own" a P-40E, and kept it at the airport there.

I have quite a few photos of it, even got to sit in the cockpit for a bit. The first thing you notice is the gunsite on top of the cowling.
