i'm a jr and my oldest son is a III

my dad goes by our first name, i go by a shortened version of it, and my son goes by "lil" same name as me.

only time it got confusing was when we was all at a small wedding.
another guy and his son (sr. & jr) with same names were there.
made 5 of us with same name in a small area.

James Whitmore, Jr. (Brooks in Shawshank for you youngsters) didn't like the "junior" so he dropped it when he went to Hollywood in the 40s. He named his eldest James Whitmore, III, who then entered the business as James Whitmore, Jr. (CPT Gutterman on Black Sheep Squadron, directed about 15% of all the television episodes over the past 25 to 30 years).

Confused? I am.

My dad and I have the same first name but have different middle names, and I go by my middle name. I have a son on the way, and he will have the same first name as me/my dad, his middle name comes from my father in law.

Had a friend who named his kid Jr. and immediately began to sign his name as Sr. Like there would be some confusion between him and the toddler.

My father came to work for the same company as me in 2008. As a II, my quarterly bonus went into his direct deposit.

He called me up to brag that he had just been gifted 7k. I was not amused.

I'm a junior, and thinking about it, I honestly dont know why you would name your son after yourself if you are a first. I do, however, see the appeal to carry it on if you had a good father.

Our family has a few names that have been passed down since immigrating. If God spares me the hell of having no daughters, and treats me to a couple sons, the elder will be a III, and the second would be one of the other family names, probably whoever I like most in our family at the time.

I wanted to name my son after my father who is a jr. My son shares a middle name that goes back 5 generations.

That is the tricky part. Once your father takes the dive, it is easy to go to a III or something, but the OG jr. is the tough decision.

No. I would let my son have his own identity tied to his unique family name.
