Sr, Jr, III is fine. Any more is too much. I'm III. My grandpa went by our actual middle name, my dad with a shortened version of that, and what people call me doesn't relate to my actual name

I'm a Jr. and go by my middle name. I've found that it creates more confusion than necessary. We decided on unique names for our male kids.

My son is a Jr. Threw it out to the wife when he was on the way and she liked it. Guess opposite experience from you.

I have the same name as my dad but am not a junior because we have different middle names. My middle name goes to the first born male in my family and my dad has a older brother so my dad missed out on my middle name.

Also, about the Jr. versus II topic. I never thought about it until recently but technically (?) the elder's name changes upon going with the Jr. option (i.e. if Usain Bolt names his son Usain Bolt Jr., then Usain Bolt becomes Usain Bolt Sr.). This would seem to create confusion with documents, etc.

I've had numerous occasions with additional forms to be filled out due to the Jr. confusion issue.

With the II option, the dad's name doesn't change at all.

My wife probably just hates me.

Nah, the real issue for her is that our names are really similar so junior seems like overkill.

As a III, the point of a nick name is to differentiate your accomplishments from you father's and grandfather's.

And it's cool.

I understand that, but it seems counterintuitive to the reasons you'd carry on with a junior in the first place. If you're going to go by a different name, why keep the trend?

I don't see a problem with it really. My son is sort of a junior...his middle name is different than mine. Traditionally in my family the father's first name is the son's middle name. Nothing really went well using my name as a middle name. So we decided to go with the same name as me option. My grandfather had passed away only a few months before my son was born, so we used his name as the middle name. Came out good.

It may be antiquated, but in a study done at Harvard, juniors made up 21% of the class and 76% of the elected officers of that class despite being only 3% of the US population.

So is it reserved for the elite or is it trashy? Is it both?

If you do, don't let him put it on the back of his jersey. It is not part of his last name. It is not necessary to distinguish him from you, unless you are also on the team.
