Was at a Cane's in NOLA yesterday for quick snack. Older gent walks in with two girls, one of whom is autistic. Restaurant has a decent amount of people in it, not packed but not empty. Man is around 70ish, his grandkids were elementary age.

Anyway, he goes to use bathroom and oldest child goes too. As soon as they both go to the respective restrooms, the little autistic girl makes a break for the door and runs out.

I'm at the table closet to the door so I go out to get her. She refuses to stop so I grab the girl and fireman carry her back to the restaurant. Now at this point she is screaming hiting me and making this awful noise. I walk back in the store and everyone is staring at me. I ask the nearest person to bang on the men's room door to get the man out.
He comes out and before he says anything else he sternly demands that I put hos grandchild down.
I try to explain to him what happened and he stares at me like I was trying to steal his autistic grand daughter.

A lady explains it to him and he still doesn't thank me. Not that that is what I wanted.
He leaves with the kids, leaving the half eaten food. I see him smack the crap out of that girl as he was walking back to the car.

I felt bad for her. Obviously white trash, and just "off".

I talk to the lady who talked to him and she said "I wouldn't have gotten involved, touching kids these days can get you in trouble"

I just laughed that off.

I mean, had everyone just sat there and not reacted that poor kid would be gone or even ran over.

Guess I'm ranting, but at the same time dismayed that people just don't want to help when help is needed for fear of possible repercussions.

TLDR..

Kid ran out of Canes and I grabbed her but gramps wasn't happy, and then smacked the kid after it all said and done.

You did the right thing.

You kept her from getting run over. He's obviously completely negligent for leaving an autistic child alone.

He left both kids, but the oldest left the autistic kid. I pegged her as autistic when she came in, because she was looking at things at making this noise, almost like a honk. Sweet beautiful little kid too. She didn't know any better.
When I saw him smack her I wanted to go have words with him. To describe his trash level he was driving a Topaz, I have not seen a Topaz on the streets in fifteen years. lol

Well, you were at Canes and this board tells me fast food is trashy.

You did the right thing of course. There are 3 rules for interacting with other peoples' kids:
• Never physically touch another person's child (your situation of course demanded it, but under normal circumstances...)
• Never EVER allow yourself yo be in a situation where you're alone with another person's child (always have a third person, preferably an adult, with you)
• Never make any comments about another person's child's looks or physical development--nothing more than "nice haircut."

You do this stuff to protect yourself.

I seen a 1.5 year old running through the mall all by her lonesome. No parents in sight, me and several other just stood there waiting for someone to react but never did. My wife said worry about your own kids. So I just started walking again.

Perfect scenario for that What Would You Do? show. You did the right thing. I have a cousin who is autistic and he has done that same exact thing before.

You absolutely did the right thing. You couldn't just stand there and watch her run out into traffic or take off into New Orleans. I know you gotta be careful about grabbing kids and stuff but you seriously could have saved her life. Don't doubt yourself for one second. That old man is probably just exhausted and pissed he is looking after his grandkids. Who knows the situation he is in.

I might be misreading this, but always put the kid down before trying to explain.

I would've done the exact same thing.

No way I'm staying in a Canes unattended.

You did the right thing. Don't second guess yourself.

Grandfather sounds like he was caught off guard and probably embarrassed, probably mix that in with a little white trash too.

If I'm there with my kids, I'm not gonna do it.

If I'm there with friends, maybe. I'd probably get one of my friends to do it. I'd hold down th table and make sure nobody gets my food.
