I have been Catholic my entire life and nobody has ever told me I am going to hell for anything. We have that whole forgiveness thing going for us.

I was raised Baptist. It all seemed weird to me from a very young age. Everything was threatened with "you'll go to hell for that". I can clearly recall the girls with the stupid purity rings and thinking to myself how insanely controlling that was.
I was ostracized when I asked one of the adults at the church heading this if they would purchase a car without test driving it first? The woman was absolutely disgusted that I said that to her. While she clearly didn't agree, I made my point.

the Catholic Church certainly does teach that premarital sex is a bad sin.

It teaches that premarital sex is a misuse of the gift of sex.
And yeah that is sinful.

Fair enough, but this....

Sounds very different to any Baptist Church I've ever known of.

I don't care if you believe me or not, but I absolutely did. I questioned numerous things at church as a child and they hated me for it. I recall numerous times where I was told that it's best if I not question everything and just have faith.

You can probably see where my religious beliefs fall and some of the events that led me to where I am now.
I can go on and on about the religion thing.

You were ostracized for asking a stupid question?

Either a really poor excuse for a church or you are exaggerating.

It's possible. Religions tend to vary slightly based upon region. My entire family was hard core Southern Baptist. My recollection of it all were numerous threats of going to hell for sinning. This could have possibly been the other kids I was around repeating this and not so much the adults forcing it upon us, I honestly don't know. I denounced organized religion at a pretty young age and stopped paying attention even though I was forced to go.
