Bret is another guy who is a HUGE mark for himself. Great technical wrestler but wasn't nearly as good as he thinks he is in his own mind. I like Bret -- I've met hundreds of wrestlers over the years, and he's one of the nicest and most down to earth of them all. He genuinely cares about the fans. He always would stay after the shows and sign every last autograph, while meanwhile Neidhart (and others) would sit in the car sulking.

Everybody here is overlooking the Rock. He is by far the biggest star that has ever come from wrestling. He can walk in tomorrow and headline WrestleMania. He's sold more product, performed in front of more people and headlined more shows than pretty much everybody but maybe the Undertaker. He's one of the best talkers and cut the best promos, other than Flair. Do I even need to bring up his movie and tv career? Nobody is even close to him..

Bret's a good dude but his mic skills were average and could have been more charismatic.

I did enjoy his work as a heel more than as a face

But Rock wasn't a face like Hogan. He was a product of attitude era antics. Agree on him being star, but not a face. With movies and social media, Cena can surpass him. WM proposal hasn't even begun to resonate

Hogan was in the right place at the right time. Depending on the region, I would say that the Von Erich's in Dallas or JYD in Louisiana were just as popular if not more, but didn't have the backing of a national company.

Who could have been the guy for the WWF during that time if Hogan wasn't picked?

Tony Atlas? Bruno was too old, Bob Backlund didn't quite have the charisma and had lost to sheiky baby.

No. Today's fan base would not allow it. We would shite all over Hulkamania if it was launched in 2017. Plus, Vince would never put over a baby face like that today. Stone Cold was close. Daniel Bryan had something cooking, but even if he hadn't been forced to hang it up, we would have grown tired of the ultimate underdog gimmick. Hogan also had without question the greatest heel turn of all time.
