Dude should just hand it over to a real author like Stephen King and let him finish it. At least then it would have a chance to be decent.

Agreed. They're fantastic.
As far as his speed of writing goes, I think what sticks in the craw of most fans is that he writes exclusively at home. He refuses to write when he's on the road and when GoT blew up, he was never "home". It wasn't until it was blatantly obvious the show was passing him up that he actually decided to stop going to so many cons and events and stay home and actually finish some things up. It also didn't help matters any when he told his publishers he could finish the book last year and busted three deadlines they set for him. And he's notorious for being a dick towards fans and others who question him.
I think there's something to be said for a writer who writes an incredibly popular series and recognizes that the fans that have followed him for years deserve a well-written ending. Props to Robert Jordan, who did it under far worse circumstances then just enjoying his newfound fame.

The lady who writes outlander takes an average of four years to write a book. She tells her fans that and everyone is fine with it.
If Martin would just give some vague time of reference I think it would make things a whole lot better.

The D&E stories provided a ton of backstory on the Great Bastards and the Golden Company, which will presumably play a big part in the ongoing story. This is just annoying.

I'm sure there are lots of factors (excuses) for why he hasn't advanced the main story line. But it adds salt to the wound when he puts out novellas like this. GRRM needs to move in with Brandon Sanderson and see how a truly prolific writer operates. Or just give over the series to Sanderson citing health problems. Just looking at him I can tell he has full blown diabetes, kidney problems and some coronary disease.

I really dislike this guy. He's an incredible writer and the ASOIAF series is my favorite but personally he's just being a huge dick about the timing. Finish the series.. then fill in the Back story.

The son of a bitch will be dead before he finishes the books.
He's 68 years old and is a fat, lazy slob. His books are great, but it is maddening that it's taken him this long to get this book out. He's living on borrowed time and he needs to get this shite over with. Needs to quit writing all these spinoffs and finish this damn series.

About Wheel of Time -
Think of a PG-rated Song of Ice and Fire with more emphasis on magic and "coming of age" stories. There are no shades of grey characters though - you are either good or bad. But the awesome world-building, political dynamics, interesting magic system and the fact that IT IS FINISHED make WOT worth your time.

The best way for him to finish the series and stay relevant past the HBO series is to let HBO play it out, see what didn't work and release "his" versions. It's smart from a monetary, string it out standpoint. I just think it's lazy and sucks for the actual book readers. These epic fantasies are hard to wrap up though. Malazan was incredible through 7 and when it came to the finish just wasn't on the same level. Herbert never released 7. His son had to butcher it. When your workers are so expensive with so much going on it feels like it's difficult to get them all back to one piece.

Much of GRRM's encyclopedia style book, The World of Ice and Fire, was cut. Much of what was cut was on the Targaryen kings, in favor of another novella to be titled Fire and Blood. It appears GRRM has opted to release his history of the second and third Targaryen kings, The Sons of the Dragon, in this upcoming anthology.
All of that was a long winded way of saying GRRM has had this written for at least two and a half years. GRRM has also stated that he will not be writing anything until he finishes The Winds of Winter, and considering he has cut down on public appearances in favor of writing, I see no reason not to believe him.
On to the release theory:
The other authors in the anthology were waiting on GRRM's contribution. GRRM has had this ready for months, but hadn't sent it to be published. He recently sent it off for an October release because he expects a late Q4 2017/Q1 2018 release date for The Winds of Winter, which he would announce a month before the release of the anthology. An announcement reading something like "... in the meantime, if fake history interests you, check out my contribution to the anthology THE BOOK OF SWORDS, where I provide a history of the second and third Targaryen kings, titled SONS OF THE DRAGON" would provide some serious advertising for his friends contributing to the anthology.
tl;dr: GRRM has had his contribution to The Book of Swords written for years. There's a tinfoil theory that he just recently sent it to be published in order for the release to coincide with The Winds of Winter, thereby providing a boost in sales and exposure for his friends.
Edit: Not to steal the thread, but how many of you that feel entitled to GRRM writing at breakneck speed refer to millenials as the "entitled generation"? Just curious.

Breakneck? Lol, you can't be serious. If they were asking for him to write a book a year, maybe, but I doubt anyone would agree six years is breakneck. Pretty much, the exact opposite.
