First time I can remember being aware of this was in the video for Three MCs and One DJ where Mix Master Mike walks into a store front, goes to the back and proceeds to go down 4 or 5 flights of stares from the ground floor.

I was also really into Urban Archaeology videos for awhile where guys just find these abandoned theaters and bars that just shouldn't exist in NYC.

To address the OP, I read an article in the Post. I didn't really understand it, but supposedly this Temple was digging to connect their Temple with an abandoned Women's Ritual Bath (not in use) and by some means "add it" to their Temple. Like I said, the motivation was confusing and Jewish.
