Then you're insane. If tipping didn't exist and every waiter got paid the same at every restaurant regardless of attitude or quality of service, the good waiters would quit and find a more lucrative job as their income would go down since tips are now artificially capped, and the service industry would flood with McDonald's counter workers.
bullshite. If your scenario where true then all fast food service would be the same. Compare Chic-fil-a with Burger King. Neither makes tips but one is a helluva lot better service than the other.

I sometimes pretip. When I am with a difficult crowd( drunk buddies etc), and I know that the waiter will have a hard time,I will slip him a 20 or so. This seems to always get us great service.

In those crowded gameday type situation this guarantees great service every single time. I never see anyone else doing it.

75% of these folks didn't watch the original video, hence the dumbass replies about tipping. It explains the roots of this dumb idea of tipping and why it exists today.

How dare you argue with group think.

Another point is tip out. Almost everyone in every restaurant has to. In mine it's 4% of sales. 4.5% on weekends. Regardless of whether I get tipped or not. If joe blow comes in and rings up a $100 tab and decides not to tip. Guess what. I have the privilege of paying $4 out of my pocket to spend part of my Friday night taking care of you and your shitty family

Expecting people to pay you for doing your job correctly sounds more like common fricking sense.
I am a giant retard.

Why Tipping Should Be Banned
I usually tip well unless they suck, so I basically agree that it's a myth that good servers get tipped more. Another problem I have with tipping is the women get tipped more because they have boobs. The guy usually pays, and guys usually are attracted to girls.
get over it

It's really gotten out of control too. Everyone wants a god damn tip. And people like me don't want to look cheap so we tip well not to look cheap. It's really annoying.
you really don't sound like someone who tips well...

How about the restaurants charge more for the food, the customer doesn't tip, and everyone is made happier by a simpler system.
do you people bitching about tipping and not spending an extra 20 percent of the bill realize that when/if companies decide to pay it's employees and do away with tipping, prices of food will double maybe even triple????? Would you rather pay $6 plus a two-dollar tip for onion rings being served with a smile, or pay $20.00 for those same onion rings with no tip.. its basic economics

A lot of legit points... I would be SUPER excited if the whole 'tipping' thing went away... The best argument that the video made was "Why should it be the customer's obligation to determine whether or not the stock boy eats tonight because the employee can't/won't pay his employees a decent wage."

I made 300$ tonight in 5 hours bartending. All of you hating on tipping are just jelly bellys

As a taxpaying citizen, why should I be happy that I'm giving someone money under the table? That's why I never tip in cash, always on the card.
just being a douchebag, to be a douchebag. HA! just looking to make sure someone else gets fricked!.. thats also why your credit card tips probably always get altered by the server

Do you think they claim CC tips?
every single restaurant I have worked at *and that is a lot* there is no way around claiming credit card tips.. you have to enter a base total in the computer to close out a credit card transaction. Ex:$80 BILL $16 base total would be$96.. the computer automatically knows every cc tip so yes its automatically claimed.. Cash tips are a different story

It should not be Scruffy's job to pay the waiter what the owner is unwilling to.
Also, Scruffy doubts quality of service would decrease.
Look, wether you like the system or not, you and everyone else know the system. So when you decide not to tip I dont make money. Now, thats my problem yada yada yada and I really dont give a frick because people like you are so minute you dont change my income at all. This is all from the perspective of a bartender btw not a server, servers get fricked even more when you don't tip because they have a lot less volume. So, you deciding to willing not tip when you know the system makes you a gigantic fricking a-hole in my opinion. Therefore, when you come back for your next round of drinks i'm going to be a gigantic fricking a-hole and go to everyone else first, not ever show you any sort of love with a drink on the house, double pours, or anything of that nature, AND if you don't tip while being a rude jackass i'm not going to put the full amount of liquor in your drink so i suggest you order beer. This is a pretty universal line of thinking when it comes to bartending so if you are someone who can't throw me a dollar when I just made you 6 shots and two mojitos enjoy drinking 50% of the liquor you are paying for. Lastly, as someone else already said in this thread, just because the receipt has a line for gratuity doesn't mean the people who bagged your to go order expect it. They all print the same you twats.

I won't say where I work for obvious reasons, but I work at a bar in Baton Rouge, and make atleast 60K. Not bragging, just stating a fact. It is possible. I am also a full time student so I don't feel bad about earning that pay either.

Calls someone a douchebag, justifies stealing. I hope you get kicked in the dick.
