Seeing a neurosurgeon about some sciatica. Getting mri and x ray results.
1st time at this place.
Why do doctors drug test?
What happens if a person has been on a 3 day coke binder?
What about a casual pot smoker?
Someone addicted to painkillers?
Full blown alcoholic?

As I sit here bored, I had to come to the experts.

You listed this 3rd so this is likely what you suffer from.

Most drugs have neurological affects. Don't worry, he's your doctor. Results are confidential.

That's an easy one. In this day and age of people "doctor shopping" to get pain killers and the state holding the doctors responsible, he wants to know if you are a druggie or not before he prescribes you anything.

Some Sciatica patients are chronic pain patients and many of them abuse pain meds.

In case he prescribes some medicine, it'd be good to know what your doing recreational wise to avoid multiplier effect.

This x 100

Vicodin is now classed same as the big boys. Oxy etc.

He is just covering his arse before prescribing you something. Don't make a big deal about the drug test. If you do your gonna walk out of there with Motrin 600mg

Did you tell him you're not taking any prescription meds right now? The only reason I can think of is he's planning to prescribe you pain meds and wants to make sure you're not an abuser

From a physicians standpoint it is called CYA and is now SOP

It also quickly weeds through the BS of a 30 min visit where you collect all kinds of info and plan an appropriate workup and then the patient says "You know doc, I tried PT before it made it worse. No, I cant take those, I'm allergic to Ibuprofen and Tylenol. I tried Tramadol and that stuff is useless. I think hydro..something worked in the past but it was the largest dose."

Your insurance is trying to bone you. They are hoping you are on something, so they can blame your symptoms on that and not pay for your medical care due to the symptoms.

Too many people use back issues as a pathway to opioids.

my wife's doctor periodically has her tested to make sure that she is taking the drugs he's prescribing for her, and not selling them.

Red flags.
