As someone who has worked in retail, the managers will push their employees to promote the store cards for 2 main reasons:

#1 -- When you pay with a regular credit card, Visa/MasterCard/etc. takes out a small percentage of the transaction. With store cards, the store doesn't lose this percentage of each transaction.

#2 -- The stores get a bounty from the creditor that backs the card every time they sign someone up for a new card.

Managers won't care about this, but corporate pushes the cards because it allows them to track your purchases easier so they can advertise with targeted advertisements.

Your day-to-day interactions with people all over the spectrum seem so difficult and confrontational.

My life has a tiny fraction of the friction yours has. I wonder why that is...

And how come nobody makes their own butter any more? Are people really too lazy to churn these days? This country's going to shite.

I got this at Payless the other day. They wanted all my personal info.

If you'd rather go to Walmart than be asked about a target debit card, sheesh.

As someone getting my masters in predictive analytics, the value of knowing your shopping patterns is unreal. Couple that with the interest expense paid by consumers and things are compounded astronomically.

I just smile at the clerk and tell them I don't have whatever they're asking for. They smile back and we go on about the transaction.

Boom. Problem solved.

I love my CVS card, as far as rewards/customer information cards go.

I live across the street from CVS, so I'm always there. The card has gotten me as much as $15 off a single transaction because the cashiers will offer to use any and all coupons on your account that work.

Right now, I have $5 in "CVS bucks" in my wallet that I got just for buying my probiotics and vitamins that I was going to buy no matter what.

How dare them not remember you from the last time you shopped there when they asked you about getting a store card!!

Credit is a very profitable business for these companies.

A family member works at a national retail chain.

They've got a monthly quota for people to sign up for the retailer's credit card.

If they miss quota, the spend an extra work day in "credit class" as punishment.

You can be sure that the employees hate the policy of pushing credit cards way more then the customers do.
