Because many foreigners are much better at numbers and fill the graduate assistant teaching then professor ranks as a legal way to get into the US?

I think learning to understand English as it's spoken by other people is one of those necessary skills college students must develop.

I dropped a few classes at LSU because I couldn't understand a damn thing the professor was saying. Looked for an American sounding name for a replacement

When I was a teaching assistant my classes were always full to capacity. I was the only native english speaker of all the TAs. Word gets out quick.

I dropped finance 3 times until I got a teacher that actually spoke English.

My first thought.

I flunked Calc 2 because 1) I couldn't understand the professor and 2) I was too stupid to drop it. Next semester I made an A.

There are two situations
1. The professor’s English is terrible and it’s truly unreasonable to expect someone to understand.
2. They have an “accent” but the command of the English language is reasonable.

I truly have sympathy in case 1. But most of the time it is case 2 and in this scenario, the student should make an effort to understand. In case 2, the student uses the “accent” as an excuse for laziness or failure.

This is exactly correct. Ability to communicate with students is a factor in hiring. The importance placed on it can vary with the institution.

However, most of the time, an accent is just an easy excuse for not doing what you were supposed to do. It us easy to fool oneself, especially rather than to blame oneself.

Another thing is that students who may not have been exposed to accents may take some time to learn how to listen and concentrate to understand. They seem to get better with experience.

I dont know if much has changed in 30+ years, but I can remember the "Professors" showing up the first day of class, handing out a syllabus, introducing his Grad Assistant's and disappearing for the rest of the semester. GA's taught the class.

Avoid the shite professors and get in the easier sections

For certain majors like Engineering, that's only true for the first couple of years. After that when classes become much more specialized, there's usually only one section and you're stuck with whoever it is.

I had a professor that straight up wouldn't show up to a 3pm class on Friday and not apologize or say anything by e-mail until the following Monday. And a couple of those days, tests were scheduled. He's still employed at LSU and I know for a fact people bitched about him.

Maybe the issue lies with America lagging badly behind the East in math and the sciences?
