Why do people say Louisiana lacks an educated workforce

This is apocryphal.
We have four great major institutions (LSU, Tech, ULL, UNO)
We also have a lot of smaller universities with good programs.
The state also has a multitude of vocational schools.
As for K 12, most people have a relative or associate who is a teacher. We never lack for educators and the system is designed for anybody to become one.
So why do we get the short end of the stick with major industries. And why do you guys feel that the state is subpar in education.

Man, there might be some great programs within those schools, but none of them (not even LSU) would I consider a great university.

Because even some people that come out with masters degrees have such little insight on how to get a job that they feel a need to constantly start new topics on the internet asking for advice and/or complaining when they do finally get a job

We lack an educated workforce because all the people that are educated gtfo as soon as possible.

As someone in consulting who travels to big companies in other states it's true.
Most employees are not ambitious, lazy, and merely capable at best. Constant complaining and petty office politics constantly. Ignorance everywhere.

Louisiana Tech is a pretty damn good technical college. ULL has a pretty good petroleum engineering school, if I recall correctly. LSU's architecture school is top notch too.
He did leave off Tulane, though.

No Tulane?

Maybe, but we still have too many public universities.

It's because our state politicians take money that's dedicated to education and spend it on dumb stuff.
Then they threaten to pull funding from our flag ship university. Why would people outside of the state want to come here with that BS. Why would graduates stay after they complete their degree?
I love Louisiana but I see why people make a b line for Texas the second they graduate.

But what is specifically the cause of this that is unique to Louisiana?
Louisiana as a whole just has nothing keeping college graduates around. It's actually really sad, because it just becomes self fulfilling now.

Because, while LA does have those institutions, job opportunities are greater elsewhere (especially in neighboring Texas), so a lot of the educated people then leave the state to work.

Just imagine how much money we could save by shutting down McNeese, Southeastern, ULM, Nichols, and Grambling.

The ambitious and intelligent ones take jobs in other states for various reasons. Texas is right next door too, which doesn't help

Most business grads from LA schools chase better jobs out of state. Houston is a prime example.

Great? You need to get out more. LSU is pretty good, and does have some great programs, but the rest are not highly valued by anyone outside of Louisiana.

I'm guessing you haven't been outside of Louisiana.
Go look at the public schools in Austin, DFW, Denver, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and other places and tell me Louisiana isn't significantly behind.
We have, at best, average universities. LSU is your average in-state university from an academic standpoint. Maybe below average.
As for public schools; Teachers in Louisiana start out with decent pay, but there is absolutely no upward mobility so most end up going somewhere else. There is absolutely no other major economy other than deforestation or oil, which are both down at the moment.
Baws have banked on making 150k being a roustabout for the past 20 years, and there's been no emphasis on education. We're paying for it now.

Because even though we have those universities, there's still a low percentage of the population that has a college degree.

I think these are hit and miss at best.

Maybe it's an issue that anyone can become an educator. I won't lie, my dad was a teacher. He did not plan on becoming one. He graduated and didn't have a plan and him and a friend said, let's take the test to become a teacher and go coach. Although my dad went on to be a decent teacher, that's a shite reason to become a teacher. There are quite a few people doing it because it's an easy way to get a check and have your summer off (I hung around the coach's office my entire childhood and can't think of a single one of the them remotely caring about what they were teaching, it was a means to an end). Better schools results mean better pay, which means more competitive teaching applicants. It's a cycle that we are stuck in the bottom of at the moment.
