That's one thing I enjoyed immensely about a trip to San Diego. No catfish. No tilapia. Every fish taco or fried fish dish was Mahi Mahi.

Picadilly attracts the elderly unlike no other.
My father loves Piccadilly like no other place. Wants to eat there every time he comes to town. I agree to this about once a year.

Why do catfish restaurants attract old people?
I'm almost 48, I remember "fish on Friday" being a very big deal growing up. It's not regional, I have family in upstate New York and they also had fish, although it was usually cod or haddock instead of catfish. But "friday fried fish" was still a tradition. It was vaguely religious, but I knew plenty of Protestants who would do it, along with Catholics like we were.
Do younger generations still do this, or have traditional meals on certain days died out?

Many restaurants in NOLA still feature red beans and rice on Mondays and fried fish on Friday.
I still love good fried catfish but I'm picky about it because I hate when places use the fake Asian version as a replacement to save .50

Red beans and rice is a regional thing, but fish on friday was pretty universal in this country at one time. I would imagine "the blue haired crowds" are just an example of that generation being more into that tradition.

I spent a few months training for work in nowhere Mississippi. The only place the older people from there would want to eat were these catfish houses. Don't understand the fascination. I mean, it's good fried fish, but no one place was better than the other, and I can only eat so much fried food. Nothing stood out better than what I could cook on my own. Maybe I just don't have a refined fried fish palate.

I lol'd. Not sure why, but there's a lot of truth to this.

Cause by age 60 you lose over 55 percent of your tastebuds. They can't taste the nasty bottom feeders.

These places are like magnets for old people. Why?
During the Great Depression there was very little work and almost no money. People still had to eat something.
Catfish are easily found and caught. They are plentiful and they cost nothing to catch. People tend to like to eat what they were raised eating.
The old people you speak of were raised by people that lived through the depression and eating catfish was a habit that continued once it was over.

When I was a kid there was a local place in which Wednesday's were all the catfish you could eat night. We use to go just about every Wednesday, it was the only time we would go out to eat that wasn't for a special occasion, but it seems like I have never found a place that fried catfish the way they did.. Either way, you can't beat a good deal on fried catfish.. And like someone said.. Nothing like a good hushpuppy or two to go with it.
