Actual answer (I'm speculating) - they figured out how to make a hardtop convertible.

So, the "Vette gets 'em wet" meant something different?

When they stopped allowing the 'yeah brahs' to cruise the Lakefront in New Orleans, it killed the market for em.

x1000. I have replaced the seals twice and within a year, one or both would start leaking again. I now keep a 2" wide roll of tape in the glove compartment in case I am caught with a storm on the horizon.
Add, those T-tops were easy as hell to steal and there was a big market for them. All that was needed was a butter knife and a couple seconds and off they came. Aftermarket locks deterred only the amateurs.

I got a grand national with t tops as a graduation present. Cat slayer. Still sits in my garage to this day.

The t-top came into heavy use when convertibles disappeared from the market in the mid 70's. For a while there were no domestic convertibles. The T-top requires heavy modification to a car, including structural bracing similar to what convertibles need. This is heavy and expensive. Once convertibles came back, the t-top became a lot less popular.

I loved the 2 t-top cars I had, but the Targa top was where it's at!

My sister in law had a 280ZX with T-Tops. She lived in Houston and the T-Tops were getting stolen on the reg. You could buy used T-Tops from the salvage yards who were buying them from thiefs. Nice little racket they had going.
She traded it in on a nice day minus the T-Tops

The government outlawed convertibles for a time and I think the T-top was a response to replace that.
The ragtop convertible is still the king.

It was really awesome when mine were stolen twice and I couldn't afford to replace them. And never rains in Louisiana.

Bad arse.
Pretty awesome. Looks like something James Caan would've driven in the '80s.

How many people could actually fit in these sports cars?

I find it funny when rich people drive around in sports cars. I just imagine myself running them off into the river.
