Historically, yes. Civics cost more than Cavaliers and Tempos. Camrys cost more than the Taurus and Stratus in the mid-size segment. Talking about context here so you need to think back more than the last 5 years.

My last Silverado was very reliable. So was my last Tahoe.

Not sure I'd buy an economy car from the same company though.

Can you imagine the quality of cars Detroit would be making today if we had trade barriers that kept out the foreign competition or tariffs made their prices much higher?

We'd still be driving rusty shite that couldn't make it 100K miles if the Japanese competition had not forced Detroit to up its game.

People buy new cars every three years, so the engineers shoot for three years or 100k of reliability. Why would they over build something? It would just cost more

I am more concerned on why we cant compete on comfort. cars in the 70's were rolling tanks that felt like you were sitting in a sofa while driving and you couldnt feel a bump on the road.

According to Conusner Reports, Subaru is one of the most reliable brands.

Same with Japan autoworkers.

TOKYO (Bloomberg) -- Labor unions at all of Japan's automakers are seeking an increase in base salaries and bonuses, as companies including Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. forecast record profits this fiscal year.

I'm saying we have way more domestic vehicles sold in the US, so more people have domestics that break down.

This is just dumb. All of these statistics are rates, not total number of issues.

Honda has been falling in reliability ratings along with Acura. i think they have some major issues with the Civic. MDX gets reviews of developing rattles.

Audi surprises me too, I would need a few more years of data before dropping $60k+ on one of their cars.

Another source of reliability data. Different method of obtaining the data and mostly similar results. Only considers mechanical reliability (engine and transmission)

Because the foreign vehicles made on domestic soil are made with domestic parts, while the domestic vehicle companies that make cars on foreign soil use foreign parts.

Not many people are going to abuse a Lexus like they will a Silverado. You can say that for most of this list. Not many work vehicles in there. Or what about pulling trailers, doing work, gravel and mud roads, straining the engine pulling loads up hills. It's not apples to apples. Ford sells a million trucks, 200,000 get abused to shite. Not that way with Lexus, Buick, Audi, whoever....

My old man's Lexus LS has like 250k miles on it and it still runs great. I've seen the same with others.

I don't know about the rest of this list but I believe the Lexus hype.

I have friends that work as technicians in the auto industry (*Sauces... lol). Some of which started in the 70's out of high school and still work in that industry.

Here are a few tid-bits of information that have been passed on to me through recently by them.

-American and Japanese car mfg design their vehicles with the idea they will have 250K miles put on them.

-Statistically, the frequency of repairs increase substantially on a vehicle after 80k miles.

-American mfg have a tendency to roll out new tech in their models faster than Japanese Mfg. While new tech is tested it is not usually proven in real life so as a result, Japanese mfg vehicles tend to be marginally more reliable (as in less prone to minor problems such as switches, buttons, software glitches, ect..)than their American counter parts.

I have no independent data to support any of the above. Merely what I have been told..

How else can you explain why someone would buy a Chevy Impala over a Honda Accord?

To be fair, the Impala looks a lot better than the accord, IMHO. The new accord is about as lackluster as they come in the looks department.

I believe the Lexus hype too. I really do. I still think if they made dually's and 3/4 trucks that got really put to work their reliability would suffer. How could it not. Look I know why Buick is up there and Chevy/GMC isn't. Because going to church and the grocery store once a week ain't a lot of abuse.
