Locals down here call them noseeums and they are fierce little frickers. They have been terrible the last few days. I grew up in South La and would take Mosquitos over this crap.

They get bad for an hour or two each night. They definitely run us inside.

I call them flying teeth.

I grew up on the coast and the sunrise/sunset period you won't see me hanging out outside. I get welps or whatever from those things and it's miserable.

They live in the soil. If you're the worst kind of masochist, work in the garden. As much as pulling weeds sucks, the aggravation factor increases exponentially when gnats are nibbling on your arms, ears, ankles, and arse crack. Those bastards make a miserable experience even worse.

I'm not an entomologist, but there is a small, flying insect that is indigenous to our area. They are commonly referred to as gnats, and they bite more frequently than a fat man at a casino buffett.
