We plan to hit at least 2 or 3 rope drops.
As for all the negadisneys here, the last time I went it was thanksgiving week and the weekend before. Everyone here said it will be packed and will suck. We didn't think it was that crowded. We waited only 45 mins for one ride we couldn't get fast passes for.
We had a blast and don't believe it will be anymore packed then it was Thanksgiving week because school is not out in many parts of the country.
Disney is all about planning and for anyone who says it was horrible and won't go back, doesn't know how to plan their vacation.
I started this thread for this exact reason, still trying to fine tune my vacation, by getting advice on rope drops.

Crowds were not bad today. We knocked out most everything we wanted and ended the day at 4:00. Longest wait was 45 min. It is all about planning. If you go in "winging it" you will likely have a miserable time.

If you go at opening you can stay ahead of the crowds. We always go early, go back to the hotel in the middle of the day for pool and nap . We go back in the evening fresh and cool and enjoy it more.

If you want to beat the rope drop crowd get the meal plan. Schedule breakfast with beauty and beast at 7:30. Show up at 7:15. Done with breakfast and in to empty park before it's too hot by 7:45 and the rest can't get in until 9.

I just looked it up, this Friday MK opens an hour early for magic hour, so we will do the rope drop for it.

I got a solid interest rate on a home equity loan. Not skipping a meal or waiting in line.

Doesn't so much reward them as punish those that were gaming the system (like you did [and like I used to {I was the designated FP sprinter}]).

Planners still benefit from this system.
This is true, but not as much as before. The one upside is that towards the end of the evening, you can start killing FastPasses.

This one is kinda worth it if you have kids. They do a little show with Mickey and some other characters before opening the gates.

If showing your kids a good time and seeing them with a smile on their face doesn't provide you with fun or happiness, then you have much bigger problems.

Go to the Rose and Crown and get hammered.

I witnessed the rope drop when I was working there over 20 years ago. It was right about the time Splash Mountain opened in the Magic Kingdom.
Moms and Dads pushing baby stollers at a full sprint was a sight to see.

They are just there to slow down your sprint to the headliner attractions.
You can get the character pics with less lines AFTER you ride everything you want

I am 40 years old and have never been to Disney.
This might explain my unending and seething anger.

wtf is the rope drop
Traditionally, Disney has cast members holding a rope at some point inside the park to prevent guests from going to far into the park before the actual opening time. They "drop" the rope at a designated time and some people sprint to get to attractions. Although, I'm not sure they even use a rope any longer in MK. It may just be a wall of cast members you have to stay behind.
They typically will allow you inside the turnstiles prior to the official opening time so that they can better manage the lines at the turnstiles.
We've done rope drop but never were at the front to sprint to an attraction. I find it a good way to get some of the rides done with little-to-no wait. What I would suggest is getting FP+ for the Fantasyland attractions (Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Peter Pan) if you have a desire to experience them and then head either left into Adventureland to take in Jungle Cruise and Pirates with virtually no wait or head right into Tomorrowland for a quick spin on Space Mountain. Many of the people that are there for rope drop will make the mad dash to Fantasyland.

I haven't been since ~1995, but back then, if you stayed at a hotel on the property, they would let you show up a little early and enter the park, but only up to a certain point. At this point, they had employees manning ropes across the walkways. When the park officially opened, they'd drop the rope and you could sprint to be the first on the major rides like Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, the Haunted Mansion, and the mine car roller coaster. If I remember correctly, there are certain back alleys that most people don't know about where the really hardcore people go to queue for the rope drop.

I have to admit, it was fun to do the rope drop and haul arse to Everest for 2 back to back rides.

We're all glad that you solved that mystery. We were all waiting with bated breath. Hopefully you'll be able to figure out what or who bears responsibility for your shitty posts next.

Yeah, so, I went thrice as a kid here's my stance on it now as an adult:
I don't understand adults going there alone or as couples, because it's definitely for kids. That's just weird. Like pedo weird or a sign of arrested development. I want to ask those people - do you also play on kids' playground equipment or still watch children's cartoons?
However, that said, I also don't understand adults who have sour attitudes about taking their kids there and who expect to personally get nothing out of it. Dude, kids (of the right age - as in not too young but also not teenagers) freaking LOVE Disney World. Love love love. You should definitely expect to have fun through your kids' fun. Seeing it through their eyes. If I had kids I would take them and I think it would be a blast to watch them geek out for days.
