Boulder is awesome, but I'm more inclined for the Pacific Northwest

Outside: I'm biased, but the Piedmontese region in Italy. Great economy, stable living, relaxed lifestyle, etc. That or Spain/Portugal

Why do so many people prefer the North Carolina mountains to the Virginia mountains?

Inside: Burlington, VT
Outside: I'll go with Australia. Similar culture to the US, plenty of different areas of the country for skiing, beaches, hiking, camping, etc., and great accents

Vienna, Austria consistently tops the quality of life indices based on cost of living, public transportation, and health care. However, I can attest that most of the people have a foul attitude and there is little that is interesting in terms of cosmopolitanism or arts/culture (despite its reputation).

Lol. I guess it's a tough crowd.
Even this OP got a down vote. Go figure.

For outside the US, I'm surprised no one has said: Costa Rica. Beach, mountains, great fishing, great climate. Cheap. Easy living.

It does appear that Costa Rica has a lot to offer including a low cost of living.
Switzerland is incredible also but the cost of living is extremely high it seems. I've also read that getting a job there as a foreigner is almost impossible.

Sadly, I don't know enough about our country to make a legit comment ( retirement will change that, God willing).

I have traveled a lot outside of the US (to all of the aforementioned places listed in the posts above...except Costa Rica - yes, a subtle brag I know) and hands down it would be New Zealand for me. Great people, great beer, beautiful places, and a nice...albeit a cool and occasionally wet climate, put it at the top for me. Ireland would be my #2.

I was interested in New Zealand, but a friend of my dad lived there for a few years and said the women were unbelievably aggressive (not in the good way, but in the butch, masculine way) and that it was the worst dating scene he had seen in his life.

Switzerland seems great, if you can afford it. Spain and Italy if you know the language well.

Wherever your family is....assuming you have a good relationship with them.

It's getting harder and harder for people my age to make a living in their hometown as we become more mobile. Those of you that live in a decent place just a few miles from your sibling and your parents have it made.

I'm married so I guess the dating part of the equation wasn't taken into account for New Zealand.
