While I agree that no place in the US compares to the legit answers, I think the worst place in the US is Cairo, IL.

Not enough IMO...I will give them credit...they do have a sonic to settle fights. Still...worse than Pecos.

ETA:

However they are both fine towns compared to Jal, NM.

simply can't get West Point in Monrovia, Liberia out of my head. This is where they have the infamous "toilet beach" where the entire population just goes and shits in the sand.

And you could argue that it isn't even a top 3 reason for not wanting to live there.

Jonestown Mississippi and it is not close.

That is quite possibly the worst rural place to live in the US. The world, however, offers worse.

Ummm Odessa is insanely worse. And I hate both of them.

I don't acknowledge a difference between the two

I went to Port Au Prince after the earthquake 5 or so years ago. I couldn't imagine any worse conditions. We were there to help install roofing and mechanisms to allow somewhat clean water to get into their cisterns. We were driving to one location and we came across a lady running naked through the streets screaming that she'd been raped with 3 police officers behind her laughing at her, presumably because she was running naked. We saw kids so hungry that the pigment in their hair began to change. Some guy came up to a building we were working on with a crudely amputated leg. His leg was easily the worst smell that I have ever encountered in my life it filled the whole area. The rest of his leg was just there rotting away. If there is anywhere worse, I don't want to go.

Watched some stuff on Cairo on youtube a couple years back... That town has been ripping itself apart for years.

It's the smouldering aftermath of Mississippi Burning... except instead of Mississippi - It was Gary, Indiana.
