re: Where and when can you find the best fall colors in the USA?

Key is to find areas heavy in deciduous trees (obvious I know). Georgia has so many pines that finding the best colors is difficult compared to other areas.
Those in the Atlanta area should hit up sweetwater creek if you're also seeking colors. Should be next couple weeks.

I've been told that if you go to Walmart the week before school starts you can find the illusive 64 pack of Crayola colors that are without a doubt the highest quality of colors.

New England area is probably the best. But down through East Tennessee/Smokies area is really nice this time of year too.
Locally, I like to walk down at St. James Court here in the Fall. It's a walking court (no street access) with the original mansions built in the late 1800s with the walkways still lined with gas lamps. There's a large cast iron fountain in the middle of the court and it's really nice when the leaves have started to turn.

Let's just say anywhere in the Appalachains. Blue Ridge Parkway from the Shenendoah Valley down through Western NC is a great drive this time of year.

I'll be taking a 10 day round trip drive up thru that area starting about the 18th starting from Texas. Put me in the Asheville area about the 21st or so. What is your estimate of the color quality at that time?
thanks

We visited Vermont last year at the beginning of October and caught the peak of the fall foliage. Pretty awesome colors and with the moutainous/hilly terrain there and quaint country roads and towns, if there is a better place, I'd like to see it.
Probably the most non-commercialized area of the US I've ever visited. They don't allow billboards there, for example.

The stretch between Pittsburgh up through the finger lakes in New York State and into New England is beautiful this time of year.

I'm going to go with my namesake...
New England is pretty awe-inspiring though, as well as the Blue Ridge.

This. A few years ago we rode up there in the fall and it was freaking beautiful.
