At 19 with one baby under the age of 1, going from friend to friend"s house trying to find a place to stay. My ex was off with his girlfriend. I couldn't get a job, because of the nanny and couldn't get assistance because I did not have a permanent address.

This is when girls start dancing to make ends meet

I don't remember us being poor because kids don't care or realize those types of things, but my parents talk about having to save money to be able to afford gas to go to the grocery store, and then maybe not having enough money for groceries
My mom just recently heard stuff like this about her childhood. One of her older brothers told her about how poor the family was when she was growing up. She just realized the reason why she always made her sandwiches so thin for her kids (me included) was because her family couldn't afford a lot of lunch meat or peanut butter, so her mother just put the same # of slices on, but the slices were thinner.
My mom has always hated thick sandwiches and always only put like 2-3 pieces of see-through thin turkey on a sandwich

Got divorced.
Got laid off.
$6000 in CC debt that I couldn't pay.
Living in a trailer.
$205 a week from unemployment.
Humbling.

Same here. Dad didn't make much working in a sheet metal shop, mom stayed at home. Working class neighborhood, mix of retired folks, military and blue collar with a few white collar mixed in. Think our rent was $50 or something like that, early 70's. He'd still put enough away to afford a vacation every year. We didn't do without, just didn't have a lot. Patches on Toughskin pants were the norm in those days.

Wen I was 8-10 or so. My dad got laid off from a foreman job for a drilling company and couldn't find work. My mom worked for the state as a purchasing agent so she didn't make much money.
We didn't have money to do extras but we never did without.

Will not say that I was poor, but things got tight during college. Roommate and I decided we would save money on the utilities by not running the heat during the winter. Our apartment was about as well insulated as a Hooverville shack and I can remember seeing the thermostat bottomed out under 40 degrees. I remember playing video games with gloves on because you could see your breath in the living room. I think about it now maybe I should have prioritized heating the apartment a little higher than booze and partying.

Now
Just got divorced, child support on 3 kids, mortgage, utilities, gas, food. Yeah it's a struggle but it's also less stress and my health has drastically improved.
4 years ago. divorced 2nd time, child support on 4 kids, catholic school tuition, rent, utilities, very little food besides pizza at the parlor. Depression set in and vodka was often chosen over food. not really.
that 1.5 years was worst of ma life. Pay check to Pay check at day job left me about $400 in the hole. Funny how family court judges don't give a frick about that even if you bring printouts of budgets and supporting documents. Anyhooits.
Had to pick up as many pizza shifts as possible. Working till close to midnight some nights and scrambling to a Chase ATM to deposit tips to cover the tuition draft after midnight. You kids' college poor stories are funny and full of fond "look how poor I am" feelings. When your exes hold binding judgments and your kids depend on you, it's not fun. But hey. I did it to myself. Wear rubbers and don't leave your wife for an upgrade, kids!
And frick you, OP. Thanks for reminding me of late 2011-2013.

Scrounging up quarters around the house to go to coinstar for cover money, go to free drinks, then have a few bucks left over for a mcdouble after the bar. Let's just say I'm glad to be on salary now
ETA: Lived off of my tax return from February all the way until I graduated. $2,300 for rent, food, gas, and booze for 4 months total. That was stretching it

Ran out of money towards the end of a study abroad semester during college. Had a flight back from a trip that was delayed enough to force me to miss my train from London to the town I was living in. Couldn't afford a cab or hotel(probably had $20 to my name) so it looked like I'd be sleeping on the streets for the night. Started chatting up a girl on my flight and she eventually invited me back to her place for the night
My burner phone was running out of minutes and I remember calling my gf and saying "Met a girl on my flight and am staying with her tonight, you're just going to have to trust me on this one." She got over it eventually.
