What's something you've taught an adult that you thought everyone knew?

Last night an older woman was in my kitchen while I made rice. 1/3 the way through cooking it, she pops the lid off the rice and stirs it, saying, " you almost let all the water cook off of this."
A few months ago I had to explain to a friend that a 3.5 star hotel could be crappier than a 2 star-- the stars are usually based on amenities offered, not cleanliness or what people thought about them.
On the flip side, what has someone taught you as an adult that you felt stupid for not knowing?
Mr. 1999 was recently dumbfounded to hear that I thought the sun was larger than all the other stars in the sky. I blame the Louisiana public education system.
And when we married 15 years ago, I had no idea you weren't supposed to mix bleach & ammonia. oops.

Had to teach my gf how to fry and scramble eggs. She had no idea. I learned when I was probably 8.

I am constantly amazed at the number of adults that don't know when World War II started for the US.

Natural gas is odorless, the pungent aroma is added to it by man.

Did you know there are thousands of stars in our solar system? The OT taught me that

I have taught several people how to check their oil, how do you become a grown adult and not know how to do this.

I must admit, I didn't know that there was an arrow on the fuel gauge on most cars that tells you which side of the car to fill it with until recently.

I was with a girl one day when the moon was visible in the daytime.
In noticing it, she said "I thought the sun was the moon".

Listening to a morning show in OKC years ago, the DJs had a caller who made some reference to Russia winning WWII. The DJ replies, "Russia didn't win WWII, dummy, we did."

I was going to post the gas arrow thing. I was test driving a car a few minutes ago and the guy mentioned the arrow. We laughed at home many people didn't know this.
