Bummer news for those still holding out hope for high-speed passenger ferry service across Lake Pontchartrain. WWL reports that the Pontchartrain Express "project is on hold," the offices are shut down, and the proposed boats aren't even available anymore. In case y'all missed it, the plan was for a 40-minute ferry ride that would start at a Mandeville launch and cross the lake over to Pontchartrain Landing RV Park where "luxury express shuttles" would transport riders to different points around New Orleans. Apparently, the guy who owns the land where the North Shore ferry terminal was planned, said he doesn't want to sign on for 15 years (a requirement) since it's such an iffy project.

During this exciting trip across Lake Pontchartrain, passengers can enjoy comfortable seating, TV's, free wireless internet, bathrooms and a coffee bar set up by a local Mandeville catering service.

Iffy? An alternative to driving the bridge?

Seems like it would be more of a novelty. I couldn't see people going to work using it.

Would be cool though

Same here.

I could see tourist using it. I could also seeing it being used for special events in New Orleans where parking would be an issure

Mandeville/Covington/Abita Springs is, in general, made up of relatively financially solvent people. I think a legit, comfortable alternative to sitting in bridge traffic would go over great. It may take some time but there is a definite need for something different than just being able to drive across a toll bridge to get to the south shore.

I live in Mandeville and work in Metairie and when this topic came up not one person I knew in mandeville saw themselves using this ferry as anything other than novelty. It was certainly not a viable option for a daily commute.

They looked at several locations on the southshore, including Bonnabel Boat Launch. I assume they settled on South Shore Harbor because of existing infrastructure and less local resistance.

It is an extremely stupid idea, IMO.

Novelty would wear off in about a week.

I corresponded with the foreign guy who is proposing this back in 2008. He was put in contact with me by a mutual acquaintance, and we talked about the manager position for the operation. My background(25 years) is in the passenger vessel side of the marine business as an engineer and ops manager, needless to say I reviewed the business plan which had some holes in their assumptions and when I asked some further questions they were very vague in response. I check into the group with some friends that may have dealt with them in the past and was told to wish them good luck in the venture, but to steer clear.

Additionally I have a friend who considers himself a St.Tammany government insider, who told me the ferry venture was a ploy to get development money to get the dock and parking done for a CASINO BOAT.

IMHO the ferry will never work.

Interesting...
I hadn't heard about the casino boat angle, but that sounds about par for the course..

As others have said, as a novelty, I could see it's utility - JazzFest, Mardi Gras or even a Saints game. But there's no way I'd be on it five days a week, commuting to the CBD.

The concept as I understand my friend's ramblings was to get State and fed money to develop the sight for parking and a dock. Open the ferry and let it operate. It will eventually fail and then you have a developed site that millions of tax dollars went into. After a few years of disuse and slow decay there will an effort to re-purpose the area, and what a great idea to put in a casino boat. Millions will pour in,jobs will be created, impact to local businesses will be huge, roads will be expanded and improved and hell put a dollar a head boarding tax on each patron and put that into a trust fund to improve the schools etc, etc, etc,.....

Yeah I use to be involved with casinos

So can I but I drive at about the speed limit when I drive. An extra 10 MPH won't save me that much time but at least I know I won't get a $200+ speeding ticket in the effort to save all that time speeding across the bridge

You're dumb... the speed limit is 65 mph on the causeway and the bridge is 24 miles long... some quick match lets ya know its less than a 24 minute drive, pending traffic

And how does your completely irrelevant response have anything to do with my personal belief of driving the speed limit as opposed to 10 over?

arse blood
