The person behind you isn't happy when your backup lights come on at 60 MPH.

This happened to me in 1979 in my 1970 Plymouth Duster. Had too many people in the car and the person sitting in the middle between the bucket seats in the front moved the gearshift up two positions.

Transmission never was the same but the car was drivable after that. Sold it a few months later and the new owner drove it for quite a while.

I did this in a 1967 dodge coronet with a 1971 383 magnum/727 combo. Was doing about 50 on a causeway with foot on the floor, trying to manually up-shift fooling around- went too far, into reverse, locked up the back wheels. I drove that car for another 10 months and sold it. Guy that bought it was happy cause it had seatbelts...

The new electrically controlled cars probably will not shift into reverse, just do some fancy crap.

Done it (mid 80's Pontiac)... locked rear wheels up. No transmission damage.

But if you bring them in close and hit the break, they'll fly right by

I've done it, by accident in an 85 Chevy C10. It was like hitting the brakes, but it didn't destroy the tranny.

I'm close, I had a '74 Ford Maverick with the inline 250 cid six with C4 transmission. I was driving past a girl's house at 2:00 am and the signal for her to come out to meet me was me to rev the engine as I passed the house and I would drive around the block and she would have snuck out of her house by then. I wanted to put the transmission into Nuetral to rev the motor but didn't notice that I went to Reverse instead. (The Pecker was actually in command by this point) I tried to rev the motor but the car just kept slowing down and finally stopped and began to back up. That's when I noticed it was in Reverse. No later issues with the car.
The girl: She was good trouble. A OT 6.5 to 7 in Daisy Dukes and a flannel shirt with the tails tied in her cleavage.

Happened to me once while driving in Baton Rouge late one night in my old Silverado. Well, technically the back of my girlfriends's head knocked the column shifter up from drive to into reverse on I-10 when she sat back up.

The truck slowed down really fast and scared us but it didn't break or anything. Drove it for another 5 years.

Did it in my old truck.

Tires started squealing, but it didn't break anything.

Buddy in high school had a rental car for a couple weeks while his car was in the shop. It was a Saturn Ion, mid-2000's model. He threw it in park going roughly 50mph and nothing happened. It just kept making a clicking sound like it was trying to engage park but couldn't.
