you underestimate the importance of money to people who have lots of it.

You should pick up the book Embers of war, very comprehensive although you could tell some left leaning when referring to certain aspects, but all history is told from some view point. All in all it was very informative. Possibly one of the top five I've read.

But in it it points out the certain neuances in the different communist enclaves and you see that in hind site sometimes there wasn't as much Soviet influence as the States at the time wanted you to believe. The Domino theory was a real thing but not something that was some well executed plan.

Communism will eventually be outcompeted if there are captialist countries. These capitalist countries would become stronger, with better ecomonies, more self reliant people, and more advanced militaries. The USSR understood this and that is why it supported communist revolution around the world.

Here's your problem. It wasn't "two countries" that "were hell bent on spreading ideology."

Despite what your liberal/socialist high school teachers and college professors may have taught you, it was only one country. And the other country had to take a stand on behalf of freedom and liberty and call an end to all that B.S.

It's called "Little Dick Syndrome"

And the Russians have it even worse than the Irish.

It's the cold weather and inbreeding.

Despite the two MoH's and Smedley Butler being a badass, he was a fricking loon.

Countries are not people. They are run by *individuals* who stand to win or lose.

Why would either JFK or Krushchev just give up? They both rose to power by promising their people lots of things, but seeking a merger was simply never in the plan. If either of them had said "Yeah, we should be just like them" he would have been jailed for treason. If you're on top then you have to please your supporters.

So a Cold War was probably the best possible outcome.

The world was simpler in the Cold War. Each side had an interest in keep the lid on the crazies on their side (and the flexibility to do so).

No mistake Islamic terrorism really amped up as the USSR imploded.

I can understand why Stalin wanted a buffer zone under his control, but due to another military invasion not an ideological one. What did the USSR stand to gain by promoting communist governments around the globe?

Damn, if we'd only left them alone, everything would have be peachy... History teaches us so much if we're willing to learn it.

I mean technically that is an ideology

It truly came from a war that left the world in pieces with two big dogs left at the table. One of which was positioned to spread it's government to it's neighboring western countries who were left weakened by the war. It was in Russia's best interest. The base idea of communism isn't necessarily an "evil" concept (albeit a misguided and terrible one). But to make it work, you must have everyone on board (which is pretty much impossible voluntarily).

Look at Berlin for example. On one side of a wall, you can stand in line for bread, on the other, you can work in a free market society and become rich. People will flee to the other side of that wall if allowed. So, your only way to stop that is to make sure the other side of that wall is communist as well (or literally construct a wall that you don't let people escape). So that was Russia's "desire", whether they ever planned to act on it or not. And the US knew that and walked around beating it's chest like a tough guy in a bar, letting them know that if they wanted to start shite, we'd be here.
