My daughter’s dog got sick the other night and we had to bring him to the pet hospital in Mandeville. They had to do X-rays and keep him overnight. He’s better now but the bill was $1500. I’ve got a dog also and now I’m looking at different pet insurances. Any recommendations? TIA

No pet insurance here, although wish they'd change the rules and allow HSA to be used for the vet... seems like it should qualify as a medical expense.

Pet insurance only operates only a reimbursement basis. Its not like human medicine where insurance "pays" for portions and your bill is reduced or nothing at all.

Thankfully he didn’t need surgery. It was going to be another $3500. They tell you before hand because you have to sign to saying you’re responsible for all cost

$1500 could get you an army of pit mixes to over throw the neighborhood HOA

The problem with pet insurance is (1) as it's been said it's a reimbursement process and (2) it only covers the big things. So unless you actually have that $1500 bill, you're pouring money into a pit you hope you never need. Pet insurance is like homeowner's insurance in lots of ways.

This- I looked in to it again after I had a $600 bill for an exam and meds, but it's $75/month and it doesn't cover any routine maintenance. I'll just take my chances

No necessarily. Most companies dont cover "wellness" but some do. Most will cover allergy treatments, OA, and various other frequent treated issues, but only if isnt a pre-existing condition prior to getting the insurance.

Realistically its best for owners with breeds prone to major issues though

Farm Bureau

I remember during a hurricane someone crank called HTV about what to do about their chickens and if putting them in the house in the bath tub was okay.

Somebody then said that if they had Farm Bureau Insurance their chickens were covered in the event of a loss of the chickens.

I use trupanion

used it 5 times in the first year I had the dog because the damn pup ate everything from socks to rocks

Think the deductible is around $200 and they cover up to 90% after that, of course a bunch of things are excluded but most things related to an unexpected illness are covered

I'm probably at about $60-$65 a month now
