What is your response when someone says Jesus would've been a liberal/socialist?

I hear libs say this a lot and they usually point out that Jesus advocated giving your money to the poor and not judging people, etc. I'm not religious so it doesn't bother me, but I was just curious what you guys think of that claim because usually they say it on Facebook or blogs and stuff where no one really argues with them. I bring this to the OT instead of the poli board bc there's better discussion here

I'd say "well there is a difference between someone willfully giving their money away to charity and the government forcing me to give money away to charity."

Followed by "Now go frick off."

Social conservative/fiscal liberal might be a more apt description. All of that being said, I don't think Jesus would think highly of politics as it is most often practiced.

49 years old and have run in some eclectic circles and have never heard anyone make a statement with regards to Jesus' political affiliation. What kind of circles are you running in?

In today's world, he absolutely would have been a liberal, except for the abortion thing.
conservative Christians can spin it as they may.

I dont know about all that but im pretty sure about 95% of christians would laugh at him and call him a lunatic if he were around today. Probably tell him to get a real job. And Jesus would, without a doubt, have a kickstarter.

Well the stark difference is that Jesus asked the individual with resources to help the poor, sick, etc. not the government to take from those with resources and give it to whom they deem necessary.

Jesus preached giving to the poor. Me did not preach for the poor to be low life leaches living off the government.

yikes

eta:

"The assertion that Jesus was a socialist is misguided and incorrect because the premise is grounded in the liberal ideology of American politics, not in biblical exegesis. Not one place in the bible did Jesus advocate it was the function of government to do what loving human beings ought to do on their own. As noted above, conservatives are not opposed to social programs. We shed our blood, donate our time, apply our labor, and voluntarily redistribute our income to the poor. And quite frankly, research shows we are better at it than liberals. Jesus was a conservative because he promoted charitable giving on behalf of individuals, not government. Jesus was a conservative because he promoted the hard work and success of the individual, not the legislative body of the government. Jesus was a conservative he saw giving as a ministry of the gospel, not a secular and spiritless exercise of government in order to level the economic playing field. Liberals may claim Jesus as their own, but Jesus would not claim them as his own. It takes a lot more to give from your personal resources than it does to compel others to give through taxation."

Ridiculous. Everybody knows he would have been for concealed carry, capital gains tax cuts, and abolishing the department of education.

Am I doing it right?
