A lot of good answers here, most of which I watched live also. A surreal one that sticks in my mind is the Somalia intervention, when the recon element swam ashore loaded for bear, and the news media was standing there on the beach waiting for them.

Besides 9/11.. The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, Janet Jackson's boob, Hurricane Katrina and the hunt for the Boston bomber.

The night shite went down in Iraq '91.

I was a kid. At the time it was the most amazing and frightening thing I had ever seen.

As far as unexpected events go, I'd say the Challenger explosion or the World Series earthquake. I watched both of those happen in real time.

Just from a media coverage point of view, I'll throw out the fall of the Soviet Union and the Oklahoma City bombing.

1) 9/11. Was watching CBS's Early Show where Bryant Gumble was in mid-interview with someone (I was a Senior in HS but rolled in 30 min late most days). When they were still calling it an accident I had a feeling it wasn't. I left for class as soon as the other plane hit, and drove faster than I ever have.

2) Princess Diana dying. Was at an all-night skate (yeah I know).

3) OJ chase. Interrupted 20/20 when I was home on a Friday night at age 10.

4) Katrina coverage when the levees broke. Was celebrating in Shreveport with a group of people who came from Baton Rouge & New Orleans and on the phone with many others. Elated that the city had been spared. Then the news changed.

5) Kerry Wood setting the single game strike out record. My brother was in town and said "you might want to stick around to watch this."

The dad that shot the pedophile in the head at the BR airport. The dad was fake talking on a pay phone and turn and popped the dude in the head as he walked by.

Two events:

Howard Johnson snipers / Mark Essex

It was the Christmas/new Year holidays and I had the flu. I laid on the sofa watching it on TV. The first policeman killed was our neighbor.

The live Saturday Night Live episode from New Orleans
I never knew about this. I was in New Orleans for that Mardi Gras, too.

Here's an interesting article about the whole ordeal. Sounds wild as hell. I'd love to see this episode now.

Got a chance to meet the Fan Man. He lived in Valdez for a while then moved to Anchorage. He hung himself in the woods near Hope, Alaska.
