Where do you teach?
I don't "teach" per-say. I just get some interns a few times a year.

then you must be familiar with what an opportunity cost is.. As in its not worth my time to do my own repairs on certain things.

I know I wasn't. I was respectful, punctual, eager to learn, etc. There are still some kids like that out there but they're definitely dwindling in numbers.
My point is kids at large haven't changed straight out of college. You have since you've matured and you get more frustrated with immaturity.

I agree. A whole lot of colleges just need to be shut down.

I've been involved with the same program for 10 years. The type of kid has definitely changed.

I can say that when I graduated from college in 1975, I thought I knew everything. I learned the truth as I went along. I heard the same thing from 60 year olds that I think now at 61. Every generation I would guess has had the same experience. Young people now face a vastly different world, with technology we never dreamed of. I think they will be fine. Let the young ones run, make their own mistakes, and learn as we did. When they ask for your opinion, give it to them, but do not act like the world is ending if they do not take it.

The money you make has nothing to do with your education necessarily. It's about what you're willing to do to get that money and how reliable/competent you are.

One major difference between college students today and 30-40 years ago is that the majority will finish college without ever having held a job of any kind. In my generation once you we old enough to drive you got a summer job every year of high school, and possibly a part time job during school. During college everyone worked during the summers saving money for the following school year. In the case of the guys many of the jobs were centered around construction, mechanical, industrial settings, enabling them to pick up a lot of useful skills and knowledge. When interviewing for jobs after graduation you were always asked how you paid for your college, and answering that your parents paid your way was a guaranteed way to not get the job. We have lost this major opportunity for learning life skills, and it is not the fault of the students or their parents. Society and the economy have changed, there are few jobs available for high school students, and college tuition is so expensive working summers would not cover it even if there was a job available.

Well said. Teenagers and young people out of college always think they know everything. They have to learn otherwise. Old people generally think young people are ruining society because they know nothing, have it easy, wear strange clothes, and listen to bad music.

At the current rate of increasing demand and declining supply of skilled labor we are heading toward a point where the average college grad will not be able to afford to pay to have these tasks done by someone else.

I did know everything. I just know more now .
I think the value of a college degree isn't what it used to be just because of the fact that it's becoming standard to get one. A receptionist has a good chance of having a degree now. I don't think the recent graduates being different is all that true. I think as you mature, you forget how immature you once were. I watch college kids while tailgating and think "look at this idiot, I never would have acted like that in school", then I remember I was drunk most of that time and probably did the exact same thing. Not saying there's no change, but I think it's overstated.

As for rebuilding engines, modern cars are designed in such a way that they're pretty near impossible for the layman, especially a teenager with no formal training, to take apart and reassemble in a working manner.
Nope nuts are still nuts and bolts are still bolts, although you need different wrenches now days. All engines still suck in air and mix it with fuel, ignite it and expell the result. Now tuning and trouble shooting a modern engine yeah you have to know a little.
