I get calls from people speaking Spanish asking for doe-ming-gay. The funny thing here is it is derived from the name Dominguez but most families in Louisiana dropped the Z several generations ago. One of my distant relatives has researched the name and the oldest reference to the name he found was a gentleman in Lisbon, Portugal from the early to mid 1500s. The path goes Portugal to Spain to the Canary Islands (part of Spain) to Louisiana in the mid to late 1700s.

Same here. This was on the westbank though, so they may have let us all pronounce it wrong instead of the real Cajun way without the 's'.
