RadTiger,
I had several buddies there on Diamondback/Marez when that happened. I was down at Q-West at the time. My friends told me that IDF attack was pretty brutal.
I never like taking a Catfish to Mosul. Place had some bad vibes man. I was there when the South ECP got hit by a VBED, those two artillery guys got whacked by the IP, the Kiowa flying into the power lines and the sniper trying to take someone out during the Ramp Ceremony for said Kiowa pilots.
Bad juju in that city.
ETA: If I remember correctly, wasn't a gal from 1st CAV also killed in that attack?

I was in a car accident in high school that the police officer said I am extremely lucky. Flipped a car on the interstate and somehow walked away with only broken glass wounds and poison ivy. No seatbelt (I know dumb). Thankful every day to be alive.

Driving back to Nola on I-10. I'm in the left lane right before the LaPlace exit (Hwy 51) and my front driver-side tire blows, slam on the brakes, wheel locks up, and my car does a complete 180, cross over the right lane, and end up in the field looking on to oncoming traffic. As I was doing the 180, all I saw was an 18-wheeler's grill what seemed to be about 5 feet away.
I did not go into as much detail but I had posted this earlier:

Reminded me of a time that a flight from NOLA to Houston my wife and I took circled the airport for 45 minutes. The pilot finally came on and told us he was burning off excess fuel because our landing gear was not working properly. We landed okay but the tarmac was full of emergency responders.
It was just like you said. The flight attendants were passing out wine and drinks to help calm nerves. I was on a SW flight. People were telling each other good-bye and loved were hugging and crying.

Another poster here, The Caterpilar almost killed me wrapping his jeep around a large tree turning onto gardere from river road. Lost control due to speed and mud on the tires, jeep slammed into a tree right into the passenger side door. The cops and insurance people all said it was a good thing there was no one riding shotgun when they first saw the jeep, got lucky on that one.
Had a guy try to shoot me during a fight in high school, he cocked a handgun, pointed it at me, and his friend slapped his hand down right before he fired.
Being young and dumb, my friend and I were passing our friends in the left lane on Ben Hur. We were going about 90 when the driver saw the stop sign had been turned and didn't reflect light until the last minute. The brakes didn't do much and we flew across Nicholson, jumped the ditch, landed flat and came to a rolling stop right on the railway incline. We missed a huge tree by a few feet and went between two trucks coming from each way across Nicholson. Crazy thing is that if we would have been going slower we would have hit the opposite lip of the ditch instead if going over the entire thing. Two trucks pulled us out and we were able to drive his moms Lexus home.

looked up the ejection system on the buff. Very interesting and something I didn't know the B52 had as a safety measure
We have 6 total ejection seats. 4 are in the upstairs compartment (pilots, electronic warfare officer and gunner) and 2 in the downstairs compartment (radar navigator and navigator). The 4 upstairs eject upwards, while the 2 downstairs actually eject downward out of the bottom of the airplane. Additionally, we have seats for 4 extra crewmembers, but they all have to bail out manually by diving out of the hole left in the jet by the Nav or Radar Nav having already ejected. I was in the Instructor Navigator seat; one of those 4 non-ejection seats.

Two separate instances for me:
#1 - A buddy and I were in a car waiting to turn left onto a street. A car behind us was swerving in and out of the lane. My buddy yelled "oh shite" as he checked the rear view mirror and floored it to try and avoid the guy. The driver ended up hitting the back right of our car making us do a 360. The driver kept going swerving and knocked over a couple of road signs. He was obviously drunk. Someone got the license plate and reported him to the cops. A few months go by and the cops called us saying they caught the guy when he took his car to a body shop to get fixed.
Had my buddy turned without looking behind him the drunk driver would have t-boned us going about 50 mph.
#2 - I was whitewater kayaking and ended up going over some really rough rapids. I flipped over and my helmet was scrapping and hitting the bottom of the river. Had I not been wearing a helmet, i'd been brain dead. Scarred this shite out of me.

Rolled my car upside down into University Lake with the sunroof open. Swam out through the passenger side window, which just happened to be down.

You guys do a hell of a job! I was at Khe Sanh for 3 months(the siege '68) and the arc light strikes were magnificent! Probably saved our a_ses. I was a Corpsman with 326th Marines at KheSanh, hill 861 mostly, hill 881 and a cameo on hill 881N. Too many near misses to list.
And a welcome home to all Viet Nam vets...

Hit by a car while on a motor scooter I drove to class. It threw me onto another car and I somehow ended up with my face under a car tire. I got away with only a broken jaw and some neck problems.

Sad part was we knew the young lady. She was treated in our clinic for a sprained ankle the week before.

Had a stroke when I was two weeks old
Dozed off behind the wheel on the Atchafalaya after finals week
Had a bad reaction to some drugs and felt my heart slowing down and my body going cold. Real scary stuff
All in all, I've had quite a bit of shite that'll make me thank God I'm still here. I gotta make the most of my time here considering all I've been through

Got a green light to go across the street on my bike. I tried to clip in, but missed the first time and then locked in to ride across the street - ZOOM! A lady texting on her phone runs the red light at a steady 45-50mph, crossing about 2 feet in front of me. If I had clipped in on the first go I would have been pulverized by the lady.

I was driving in pouring rain speeding and realized I had to make the turn soon and slammed on the breaks, my car did a full 360 degree rotation and never went off the road. Another time I was real drunk and was on adderall, I dont remember it happening but I got smoked in the face and fell back and cracked my head open on the concrete and had a minor brain hemmorage and had to be taken in an ambulance from tigerland.
